I get the Harry Potter thing!

Thursday, September 12, 2013

I can now say that I’ve read all the Harry Potter books AND viewed all the Harry Potter movies…and I GET IT!  That story was genius!  If you have not read the books, I highly encourage you to as the story is great (seems like such an insignificant word to describe a tale that spans seven years of a boy’s life, but yet a lifetime of magical wizardry!)

I already want to re-read the series to catch all the things I missed the first time around 🙂

So yep, that’s how I spent my first day off…watched the last Harry Potter movie (part one) in the morning, and then watched part two that evening.  You know it’s a sign of a good book/movie when you want more!

(I actually did do something besides watching movies all day…the grocery shopping is done…good thing too as I go to the Price Rite in West Springfield and I forgot The Big E starts tomorrow so it will be almost impossible to travel that way…people were already hanging on the gates, watching everything happening inside…CRAZY!)

More training…

Wednesday, September 11, 2013

Second day of training is done.   And what a busy day.

Met with the manager of the lab, the manager of the blood bank, and the head of infectious disease.

Then it was off and running because it was so busy at the hospital.  The ED was backed up with patients waiting to get admitted, and more waiting to be seen.  The hospitalists were behind on admissions and even if they were caught up there was no room to put people because we were short-staffed and waiting for pts to be discharged.  Basically in my mind it was a huge bottleneck.

We did a lot of moving patients from the ED, making sure staff was set (for 3-7, 7-11, and 11-7).  Lots of calling people to see if they would come in to work.  Lots of encouraging nurses that they were doing a good job.

I think I’m getting a little bit better about understanding staffing, printing out the proper reports, answering the beeper.

I know it will just take time.

But for now, I’m just glad to have two days off!  Two COMPLETE days off as I am going to bed at a normal time and will get up in the morning ready to enjoy a FULL day off 🙂

1st Day of Supervisor Training…done.

Tuesday, September 11, 2013

What.a.day.

SO much information!

I’m doing training from 11a to 11p for two weeks (total of six days).

The first four hours are spent meeting with “key” players at the hospital and then the last 8 hours are spent learning supervisor tasks/responsibilities with the supervisor on at that time.

Today I met with the manager of radiology, the manager of security, and the nurse managers for IMC/ICU and MS.  There was a lot of information swimming through my head at the end of that.

I also completed my recertification for my sedation and analgesia so that’s good for another two years.

The actual supervisor part was good…it was a steady but not stressful shift.  The ED was pumping for some reason, but everyone was in a fairly good mood and just moving forward.  I think the most difficult thing for me to learn will just be the different reports that I need to print out at the beginning and end of each shift and keeping track of staffing needs.  But I think that will come with time.

I stopped in after my long day (12 hours during the day time is a completely different beast than 12 hours at nighttime…there was pretty much NO downtime at all!), just to say hi and chat for a bit and it was SO WEIRD not having a patient assignment!

I was extremely glad to get home, chat with Kimm for a bit and then pretty much fall into bed.  It took me at least 15 minutes to check Facebook as I didn’t have any time to check it all day long…I was going through withdrawal 🙂

The alarm is set shockingly early…they are turning off our water from 8 am to 4 pm tomorrow as they are working on the water pipes again…SO inconvenient as I need to get a shower in.  No sleeping in tomorrow!

Downs…and a nice up.

Monday, September 9, 2013

Whew…what a day.  It seemed like whatever could go wrong, did.

First of all, Kimm wanted to mow the lawn, but was unable to because the town workers that have been working on putting new water pipes on our street were working directly in front of our house…unable to get to all the lawn.

And while the workers were doing their stuff, they left tons of deep ruts in the lawn, which are likely not to be fixed.

Then, she was STILL fighting to get her prescription filled (the one that was ordered a week ago!).  After lots of calling between the doctor’s office, the pharmacy and the insurance, it was placed.  Unfortunately, when we went to pick it up, it wasn’t ready!!

There was a nosebleed after her shower.

It pretty much made for her having a miserable day.

But…we did do something fun–we drove out to Pittsfield to hear Bryan McPherson sing live.  Always a treat!

(it was at a bar called Chameleons…can you tell?!)

I’m glad we went…we had been thinking of not going because of all the other stuff happening during the day.  The only downside was the drive…even though it was only about an hour, that’s pushing it for this old lady, especially since I had to go in for my first day of supervisor training the next day.  Thankfully Kimm drove and I was able to catch a nap on the way home 🙂

An unexpected day off!

Sunday, September 8, 2013

Normally I would have gone to work tonight but with starting out my new orientation, no work tonight!  Yay!!!

An overall very nice day…

Blueberry pancakes for breakfast (trying to use up all that produce!).

Yankee Candle for our fall candles (Autumn Leaves and Harvest…BIGOF!…those candles are getting SO expensive now…$30 for a large jar??!!).

Nice chat with my parents while Kimm watched the football game.

Finance meeting.

Studies Sedation and Analgesia (recertification on Tuesday).

Pesto pasta for dinner (eating at the dinner table!)

A relaxing walk with Izzy.

Chopped and popcorn.

Another day off tomorrow as well which I’m so happy about 🙂

A very lazy Saturday.

Saturday, September 7, 2013

What a lazy day!

Last night we were over at a BBQ for our neighbor that moved away…everyone gathered and drank, ate and laughed.  It was definitely more than we normally do on a Friday night and I think I was wiped out.  Somehow, even though I was extremely tired, I did not sleep well during the night (I’m sure it was from the drinking) and woke up tired.

While catching up on blogs and drinking coffee I got WICKED congested and sneezy…Kimm thought for sure it was allergies and maybe it was.  I eventually took an allergy pill and had a nice long hot shower.

As the day progressed I got slightly better.  What really helped was a nice nap in the afternoon 🙂

We ended the day with grilling out, taking Izzy for a walk, and watching some Chopped.

I just love days that have no plans…nice and lazy.

Last day of ICU, kind of…Friday Favorites 2013: Week 36

Friday, September 6, 2013

Wow…so I’m completely done with full-time bedside nursing.  I think I’m kind of in shock.  My orientation for supervisory kind of stuff was supposed to start at the end of the current schedule which runs until the first week of October.  I figured they would want to start the orientation earlier as I was promised 4 weeks and that would mean an awful lot of piecing together night supervisor coverage until I was trained.  So, as I suspected, they are moving the training up and it starts NEXT WEEK!  Last night was my last night working in ICU and I say “kind of” because of course I got floated!  I went to the ED for four hours and then I could have come back to ICU or stayed in the ED.  I elected to stay in the ED just because I know a lot of my co-workers don’t like to float and I honestly didn’t mind.  Plus, no one in ICU KNEW it was my last night there so it wasn’t like it was anything special.  Anyways, I will be seeing everyone as supervisor, so it’s not like I’m leaving them forever.  It was just a surreal feeling knowing that everything will soon change.

So…on to my favorites from the week…enjoy!

Favorite sweets…SO MANY GOOD things!  I think it is funny that I post all of these desserts because I hardly ever make anything!  More like eye candy 🙂

Another month of saving!

Thursday, September 5, 2013

It was a tough month of trying not to spend but the end result was worth it!

We saved just a tad over $200 this last month…which was really great considering we had the cat’s vet appointment (a larger expense).

Now if only we can continue on for next month (when we have Izzy’s vet appointment…another large expense).

A couple of good things…after next month I should have my school loan COMPLETELY paid off!!!  And we should have a little bit extra income next month if I start training!

An absolutely GORGEOUS day outside today…I spent most of it cleaning 🙂

Back to work tonight for what could possibly be my very last night of bedside nursing…

Globus sensation

Wednesday, September 4, 2013

Up and at ’em early this morning to get to Kimm’s doctor’s appointment.

This appointment has been a long time coming.  Kimm has been complaining of a “lump” like sensation in her throat for many years now and finally her PCP decided to set her up with an Ear, Nose and Throat doc.  That’s what this appointment was all about.

I felt like the appointment went very well.  The doctor was pleasant and informative.  After Kimm explained what she was feeling, he decided to do a scope (which turned out to be a laryngoscope…looking at the back of the throat, including the vocal cords and larynx).   For all you nurses out there, this is pretty much like putting an NGT in part way.  NOT pleasant.  He did numb the nose, but it doesn’t take away the horrible sensation of something being shoved in your nose.  I’m so glad I was there to give support because I’m not sure if it would have gotten done without me there.  Thankfully, he didn’t see anything.  After asking a bunch of questions, he stated that what Kimm has (yep, there’s a term for it!) is globus sensation.  He thinks the culprit is her acid reflux.  Even though she is already on medication for this (and has been for a couple of years), he believes that the acid from the stomach is coming high up in the throat and causing some inflammation/irritation which is giving the sensation of a lump in her throat.  So he is recommending increasing the dosage of her current medication from once a day to twice a day.  He will then check to see how she is doing in one month.

That was it!  So HOPEFULLY this will help as Kimm has been having increasingly difficulty swallowing/breathing (or at least having that sensation).

Of course nothing in life is ever EASY–the new prescription was going to be sent to the pharmacy, but then later on Kimm checked to see if it was there…of course not…she called the pharmacy and they said that her insurance would not put that prescription through without a prior consent from the doc!  Seriously!  So the pharmacy sent the form to the doctor’s office and tomorrow she’ll have to follow through to make sure it all goes through.  What a lot of work for something SO simple.  This is why we have health care problems in our country!

After that ordeal we “celebrated” in the afternoon by going to Target.  It was nice…we haven’t been in TWO months.  But Target, you did it to us again…SO EASY to spend money there!  I even used the new Cartwheel app on my iphone to save more money and we still spent way more than we thought we had.

Also got a call today from JK (basically the guy who hired me) and even though he had initially said that my orientation was going to start at the end of the next schedule (October), now he wants to meet with my Friday morning to put together a schedule to start my orientation starting next week so I can get two weeks in before my vacation.

Change is in the air!!
