WHAT a night.

Crazy busy night last night that ended with an unsuccessful code for my patient.

Just hate that even though it was probably better for the patient.

AND there was a bat flying around our unit!!!  The second one in less than one month…FREAKED ME OUT!!!!

I don’t need these kind of excitements at work 🙂

I had LOTS of congratulations on my new position…made me feel so happy 🙂

Now, I’ve decompressed by talking everything over with Kimm and I have to hurry myself to bed so I can get at least 6 hours of sleep before my next shift!

Friday, August 30, 2013

As much as I love fall (the turning of the leaves, the cooler nights, pumpkin spice lattes, sweatshirts, apple picking!!!!), I feel a part of me feeling sad as summer slowly fades…

The passing of time tugs at my heartstrings the older I get…

I will miss the bright summer sunshine and fresh picked summer veggies.

Enjoy the last formal weekend of summer 🙂

I accepted!

Thursday, August 29, 2013

After thinking it over last night, this morning (after sleeping MUCH better!), I called and accepted the supervisor position.

WOW.

I’m excited, but also incredibly nervous.

Major changes coming…

I will no longer work 7p-7a, but now 11p to 7a,

No more bedside nursing, but dealing with staffing, disgruntled employees, patients, family members, and unexpected ???.

No more working three days a week and having four off, now I’ll be working four days a week.

No more going in when it is light out at times, it will always be dark out when I go in now.

At least I have some time to adjust because the orientation will probably not start until early October.  This is good too because I had a scheduled vacation at the end of September and I didn’t want to lose that.

Now I just have to wait and hear what people say about me accepting the position.  Hopefully it will be good.  I never told anyone I was applying because I wasn’t sure I was even going to at first and then I wasn’t sure if I was going to get it.  I guess people will find out soon enough.

The rest of the day will be taken up with laundry, laundry and more laundry.  Have to get caught up for the weekend…I’m working three days in a row.

Kimm is feeling only slightly better today.  I told her we will continue to monitor, if the abdominal cramping continues much past 4 pm (24 hours) then I think she should consider going to the ER.  So it’s a waiting game today.

(just have to say…SO NICE not to have to think about interview questions today!)

Have a great Thursday everyone!!

And the interview went…GREAT!

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

Wow, what a day.

SO TIRED.

First of all, let me start off by saying that I slept like SH*T last night 🙂  Apparently nerves have a way of keeping me up!

I was tossing and turning until about 2 am, then I finally put my earplugs in and started listening to some music.  I think maybe finally around 4:30 or 5 am I started dozing on and off, and when I did sleep all I dreamed about was that D*MN interview!  It was actually a relief to finally get up.

After breakfast and reading blogs, I again started going over my interview questions…but of course I was so nervous that I was doubting myself…EVEN THOUGH I kept telling myself “you’re going to do great” and even visualizing myself doing wonderful in the interview…it was hard to keep positive when my stomach was in knots!

Thankfully Kimm went over the interview questions with me again one more time before lunch.

We ate, watching Little House on the Prairie, until the time I  had to start getting ready.

I left by 1:40 pm and OF COURSE as I am heading to the highway exit it was completely backed up.  I started to panic a little because I had no idea what was going on (an accident?) and decided to take a different way to the hospital, one that takes a little bit longer.  Traffic was pretty bad, but I managed to make it to the hospital by 2:07 pm.  But of course as I walk into the hospital I run into an employee I used to work with who wants to tell me something and I didn’t want to blow her off, so I talked for a few minutes.  By the time I was done it was 2:13!  I rushed up the stairs to the 3rd floor and by then I had no more time left to worry…it was happening!

I have never had a large group interview but this one was very laid back.   Everyone was very pleasant, and even though I was on the spot answering the questions, everyone was just so nice it allowed me to be more calm.  I don’t think I answered every question perfectly and I know I stumbled a bit when I was talking at times, but everyone seemed to like what I was saying and my demeanor so that made me feel very good.  The second part of my interview was with only one clinical supervisor and that was even more laid back…she basically said she was so happy that I had applied, she thought I would be a great addition to the team.  She just asked me if I had any questions…I was so nervous I couldn’t really think of anything.  She just kept reassuring me, told me that if I ever needed anything overnight when I was on, that I could call her.  I thought that was very nice and super comforting since that is one thing that makes me the most nervous…knowing that I will be the one in charge of the entire hospital during the night-time.  From there I went to meet with the head honcho, and this was what I was most worried about.  But I hardly said a word during this part…he basically talked the entire time…plans for the hospital, expectations of the supervisor role, his vision for the hospital.  He basically said he was ready to offer me the job at that time but that I should take a night to think about everything since there was so much SAID to me.

And that was that.

I thanked him and when I walked out of the hospital I felt SO FREE.  It was just so nice to be done with it all!

I’m SO glad that I took a step outside of my comfort zone and just went for it 🙂

I immediately called Kimm to tell her I was coming home…when she answered the phone, she sounded HORRIBLE.   While I had been at my interview, Kimm had mowed the lawn.  Turns out that towards the end of the mowing she started developing severe abdominal cramping, to the point where she could hardly stand up it was so painful.  She was in the house, but just in a lot of pain.  I immediately thought…she over-heated.  It was SO hot out and I could only imagine how hot she was after mowing for close to two hours.  I told her to sit in front of the AC, and if she felt like she was able, to take a cold shower.

I was home in 15 minutes…the whole time I was driving I was thinking…what were we thinking having her mow in this hot, humid, oppressive weather???????

When I got home she had been able to take a shower but was still having periods of abdominal cramping.

I decided to head out to get some Gatorade for electrolyte replenishment.  Unfortunately that only helped minimally.

I had to run to drop off library books and also did a few other errands, stopping to pick up pizza on the way home as that was how we were going to celebrate me being done with my interview.

Kimm was able to have a few slices of the pizza but then no more….she just kept feeling waves of abdominal cramping that would not let up.

And that’s where we are now…just kind of monitoring how she feels.  Hopefully this will clear up by morning.

So, not much for a celebratory night, but that’s okay…at least no more prepping for interview questions!  I’m just hoping that I can sleep well tonight.

The Call

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

WOW.

So I have an interview tomorrow.

Turns out that H.A. (former nurse manager) had been calling me all day today while I was sleeping.  Kimm said it started at about 8:45 and didn’t stop until she called at 3:30 (which is when Kimm finally woke me up to talk to her).  She was calling because she really wanted to set up an interview for me for the following day.  I was pretty sleepy talking with her so I can’t remember everything she said but she said I would be great.  So my interview is at 2:15, first with all the nurse managers, then with the clinical supervisors at 3:00, and then with J.K. (head of the entire nursing department) at 3:30.  Not intimidating at all, huh??  I jest 🙂

After I hung up with the phone, I immediately started getting nervous.

So much for a relaxing first night off!

I pretty much spent the remainder of the night studying and practicing the interview questions I had come up with by doing a Google search (what would we DO without Google??!!)

Here’s a few of the questions I prepped for…

~~Why do you want this job?

~~Tell us about yourself.

~~What are your strengths?

~~What are your weaknesses?

~~How would others describe you?

~~What would you do if there was a disagreement between a nurse and an aide?

~~How would you handle a disruptive patient/family member?

~~How do you handle stress?

~~How do you lead?

~~What would you do if an employee broke a hospital policy?

I think there were a few more as well, but you get the gist…it was a lot to keep straight.  It is SO true that until you actually PRACTICE answering questions, it seems pretty easy (thinking the answers in your head is a breeze!)  It was a bit rough the first go around, but got smoother the second time.

A BIG thanks to Kimm for helping me with that!!!

Not much time to relax tonight, just a bit of House Hunters before bed.

I’m crossing my fingers that everything goes well tomorrow!!

BU-SY

Monday, August 26, 2013

Not really much to say…it was a busy night.  Not “bad” busy, just “something to do all the time” busy.  It was my first night on with the new intensivist and I did have to call him…he was WICKED nice.  It’s amazing that some doctors can be so nice, and others NOT.

Since it was go-go-go, I had no time to look over the interview prep questions I had brought with me to work.  I glanced at them when I got home, crossing my fingers for something to stick in while I was sleeping 🙂

One more night on…

Prepping

Sunday, August 25, 2013

I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that it is nearly the end of August already!

Another absolutely gorgeous day…perfect for the windows to be open and the fresh air blowin’!

I spent all morning prepping for any potential interview questions IF I even get an interview.  Again, something that is taking me outside of my comfort zone…I’m not a huge fan of speaking in front of people and I HATE interviews (I always feel SO tongue-tied) but I wanted to at least be a bit prepared if something happens early this week.  I have a 3 page cheat sheet that I will fold and put in my scrubs tonight and review whenever I get the chance!

The rest of the day was busy too…finished reading Fly Away (SO GOOD…a definite tear-jerker at the end), made Cheesy Black Bean Taco Casserole for dinner, took Izzy on a walk/run, and now about to hop in the shower.  The last game of the Little League World Series is on…Japan vs. California.  Should be a good one.

If you are not working tonight…enjoy the rest of your Sunday!!

Stepping out of my comfort zone…Friday Favorites, 2013: Week 34

Friday, August 23, 2013

I just LOVE Fridays off!

However, this day was not all fun and games.  I actually stepped a bit out of my comfort zone today and DID something proactive.  There is a recent supervisor position opening at the hospital that popped up quite unexpectedly and I have been thinking about applying for it.  Of course there are always doubts in my mind about my abilities.  Not to mention, having to get a resume together (that’s been on my “to do” list FOREVER!).  But today I actually thought about all the pros and cons and decided to just DO IT.

So this morning was spent finally updating my resume and then writing a kick-ass cover letter if I do say so myself 🙂

Now I shall just have to wait and see what happens.  Well, okay, not just wait.  Look up potential interview questions in case I do get an interview.  Ahhh…the nerves are already starting.  I WISH I could be one of those people that don’t clam up when speaking in front of people.  But I guess I just have to admit that is who I am and deal with whatever happens if and when it happens.

But regardless of what happens I am so stoked that I actually got my butt in gear and applied.  Just doing the resume and cover letter was a great experience!!!

I was so psyched about it all I felt great the rest of the day.

I took Izzy for a walk/run–haven’t done that in FOREVER…in fact I tired her out so much she was pooped after it was over!

I made some homemade bagels–okay, so they stuck to the pan…after I pried them off and we had a sample, they tasted great!

I watched the 5th Harry Potter movie–definitely my least favorite so far.

We grilled out for dinner–yumm!

We went for a ride–LOVE 🙂

Easy, peasy, now relaxin’ easy!

Thursday, August 22, 2013

Done with my one night on!  I have to say, working only one night is mentally MUCH easier than more 🙂

And now it’s time for some time off which I NEVER complain about!

First night off–visiting with one of Kimm’s dear friends.   It’s always interesting to hear about how other people’s lives are…she’s got two little girls (I think 5 and 2?), works part-time, helps her husband with school, keeps house, and still manages to work out!  I think the one thing she loses out on is sleep.

It was a VERY nice visit and after she left we spent the remainder of the night just reading and relaxing.
