Stair Workout

Thursday, January 31, 2013

WOW…if you do workouts from home and have access to stairs, do I have a workout for you!!!

I actually have to give credit for this workout to Kimm as she’s the one who told me about it…it totally kicks your butt (in a good way) ūüôā

So here’s what you do…

Walk up and down the stairs.

Yep, that’s it.

Seems easy, right??

I did it 10 times and by the time I got to the 5th time, I was DYING!!!!  (in a GOOD way!)

So I did a total of 10 times, then did my arm workout, then repeated the stairs 10 more times.

Holy COW!

What an awesome workout…I just can’t say it enough. ¬†Works your quads AND your heart! ¬†I was panting at the end!

So, like I said, if you have access to stairs and want a quick and hard workout, try this.

Okay, so now that I’ve said enough about that…

The rest of my day consisted of…laundry (4 loads!), starting to work on my Valentine’s Day bunting (yep, I’m really going to do this Pinterest-inspired project!), and Kimm’s pre-birthday Celebration!!

It kind of sucks that I have to WORK on Kimm’s birthday, so we planned to eat out tonight…

We had…pizza and fries, from Bruno’s–we haven’t been there in AGES…the pizza is a bit cheesier, the dough a bit fluffier…it was SO good!

It was so good and I got SO full that I took a TWO HOUR nap after we ate ūüôā ¬†It was GLORIOUS!!

Ended the night with Will and Grace, Elementary and popcorn!

Mortgage Refinancing.

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

Whew!  The first step in the refinancing of our home is done!!!

Of course, it took TWO hours (when it should have maybe taken a 1/2 hour, but whatever!)

So our new percentage will be 3.5% (versus the 5.25% we have now). ¬†And because we had filed our original mortgage before May 2009 and we have a FHA loan, our MIP is much reduced (0.01% upfront, approx $18 and 0.55% monthly, approx $83, not much more than we are paying now). ¬†All in all, our mortgage will be reduced by about $200/month! ¬†And we’ll be making up our closing costs within the year ūüôā

SO glad to have that part done.  Now we are waiting to hear from our closing attorney.  We should be closing in about 2 months!

The rest of the day was spent…filing/organizing (STILL going strong), reading, watching Will and Grace.

I can’t believe there is only ONE more day left of this month!!!!

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

I’m frozen right now…

For many reasons —

Got out of work, and yep, freezing rain which I had to scrape off my car…approx 10 minutes.

Driving home…carefully due to the continued freezing rain…approx 25 minutes.

Shoveling when I got home…not too bad considering the freezing rain had fallen on top of about an inch of snow that had come down the night before…approx 30 minutes.

SO GLAD to finally be inside and warming up with coffee and my 1/2 an English muffin!

Bed is going to feel so good!

I can’t wait for tonight to just relax ūüôā

Hospital Drama

Monday, January 28, 2013

Another day done for work!

Oh, what a night…SO MUCH DRAMA. ¬†It’s insane.

To make a long story as short as I can, when my co-worker and I came in at 7 pm we both got one ICU patient each, the other nurse on had 4 IMC patients. ¬†Yes, unbalanced, but this is how they do it…we all just help each other. ¬†It was a VERY busy first four hours as ¬†my patient was an admission, unstable with BP issues and needed 2 units fresh frozen plasma and one unit platelets. ¬†He also needed to be turned and cleaned frequently…we had no secretary (so one of us three had to sit at the desk and watch the monitors at all times) AND no aide, so we were all running around a little crazy.

When the next nurse came on at 11 pm, I pretty much almost didn’t even know it as I was still so busy trying to catch up on my own documentation. ¬†Well, my co-worker who was caught up, asked this nurse, “what can I do to help?” and this other nurse responds, VERY MEANLY, “nothing, I’ll deal with my four patients and you each can deal with your one patient each but don’t expect me to help you.” ¬†!!!! ¬†WHAT??!! ¬†After some conversation that was very tense, we gathered that this nurse felt it was very unfair that he had four patients and we each had one, but he had no idea of the situation from 7p-11p OR the complexity of each of our patients. ¬† I felt like he was being unfair. ¬†Needless to say, it was very uncomfortable working. ¬†I just concentrated on my patient and that was all. ¬† But then the supervisor wanted that other nurse to go to the ER for 3p-7a and of course he was all behind with documenting so I said I would go. ¬†I was actually glad to go, to escape the ice-cold atmosphere. ¬† And to top it all off, this was this nurse’s LAST night in our unit, as he is going to go work in the ER again. ¬†Just a bad way to end things.

I guess I have to try not to take this so personally, but I just think back to all the times I had four IMC patients with no aide and other nurses had one ICU patient.  I just plodded along, sometimes thinking it was unfair, but accepting help and even asking for help.

Anyways, what’s done is done, but I just wish things had ended on a better note between all of us.

Anyways, I’m heading to bed. ¬†We’re supposed to get a couple of inches of snow and perhaps some freezing rain today. ¬†Ugh…hopefully not as I have to go back to work tonight. ¬† We shall see…

Cheesy Black Bean Taco Casserole

Saturday, January 26, 2013

FIRST new recipe of the year!! ¬†And it was a keeper ūüôā

Inspiration recipe … Cheesy Taco Casserole

Please enjoy my revised recipe…Kimm and I both loved it!

Cheesy Black Bean Taco Casserole

2 cups dry brown instant rice, cooked as directed on the package (2 cups dry rice in 1 and 3/4 cup water–bring water to boil, add rice, decrease heat to medium, cook for 5 min covered, then remove from flame, keep lid on for 5 min–done!)

1 large onion, diced and sautéed in 1 tbsp butter until browned

1 can black beans, drained and rinsed well

1/2 cup Mexican shredded cheese

1 cup salsa (we use mild)

1/2 cup sour cream

1/2 package taco seasoning packet (we use Ortega)

1/2 cup Mexican shredded cheese

Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees.  Once rice is cooked and onion is sautéed, mix rice, onion, black beans, 1/2 cup Mexican shredded cheese, salsa, sour cream and taco seasoning in a large bowl until well combined.  Spread into a 9 x 13 pan.  Sprinkle with 1/2 cup Mexican shredded cheese.

Bake in oven for 1/2 hour, uncovered.

Let sit for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Serve with lettuce and tomato, or guacamole, or tortilla chips, or sour cream!

Not only is this meal super simple to put together, the seasoning is so flavorful…no salt required…which is something for us…we love our salt ūüôā

So glad there are leftovers for tomorrow ūüôā

It’s been quite the busy day. ¬†We took Izzy to get her nails trimmed at 11 am. ¬†Once home we had our financial meeting (I have to say I’m really liking that we are both on the same page now with knowing where all the money is going). ¬†Lunch next –whole wheat English muffins, toasted and the topped with Country Crock, tomato slices and American cheese–under the broiler until nice and toasty–so good! ¬†Veggies and dip on the side. ¬†After lunch we headed out to Bob’s so that Kimm could pick up a new pair of boots after the butter incident yesterday. ¬†Thankfully they had the exact same pair–with her $10 off birthday certificate and an additional 25% off, they were only a little over $17…not bad! ¬†Home again and I spent the afternoon doing paperwork…finally determining exactly how much was spent on Christmas stuff and getting rid of a whole bunch of old receipts I don’t need anymore…felt good to get that done.

That brought us to dinner and now I’m going to catch up on writing my blogs (one down!) and reading before watching a movie tonight…WITH popcorn! ¬†Can’t wait ūüôā

BTW…scale has continued to be good to me…down another 3.2 lbs…I honestly was pretty amazed…that makes a total of 19 pounds down since Thanksgiving…THIS IS MY YEAR!!!!

Friday Favorites…2013: Week 4

Friday, January 25, 2013

Friday already again? ¬†The week sure does fly by! ¬†Thankfully tonight is my first night of two off, so of course I’m happy!

A couple of little annoyances though I need to share to get them off my mind…

First of all, I’m so irritated that my work cannot get their overtime figured out!! ¬†This is the second week now that my paycheck has been messed up due to extra time. ¬†I stayed late again this morning and after my replacement came I went up to my supervisor to try to get it all straightened out…of course that was a big rigamarole…her questioning me about who the supervisor was that approved the OT…geez…I’m already writing down my shift, what I requested for OT, and now I have to add it WHO approved it! ¬†Thankfully she changed it to what I said it was with only a minimal amount of questioning…then I had to go over to payroll and make sure that it was entered in correct and that also took time and more explanations…of course all this time I’m spending I’m NOT getting paid for! ¬†Almost 1/2 hour later I’m finally heading home, and then when I got up I had to head back to work to pick up the check they cut for me that day to make sure that the mistakes didn’t roll over to the next week. ¬†So now I am finally all correct with my payroll. ¬†Ugh.

Second thing…we were enjoying out dinner and watching Will and Grace when¬†Kimm accidentally spilled some butter from her plate onto her jeans and her nice suede boots…!!! ¬†Butter is a HORRIBLE stain to try to get out. ¬† We washed the jeans and boots immediately but unfortunately they both still have the stain. ¬†It pretty much made her in a not-s0-great mood for a while (she LOVED those boots!) and that of course affected me. ¬†Stupid butter. ¬†We’re going to try to head out to the store tomorrow to see if we can get a new pair of boots…then these can be used for outside work. ¬†Crossing our fingers they still carry these boots!!

Other than those things, the night was nice…relaxing, reading, watching a movie.

Here’s my favorites from around the web this week…enjoy!

I really wanted to have a good night at work last night.

Before going in, I dug out my “positivity” bracelet that my co-worker gave me a while back, put it on my wrist as a reminder and resolved to try to stay calm even if things got a little crazy.

And I think I did pretty good!  It was a busy night, and stuff happened, as it usually does in the hospital, but I stayed upbeat and just pressed on.

I was out at 7:30 am and home by 8 am.  NOT grumbling under my breath about work!

Let’s hope I’m on a roll. ¬†Staying positive when I’m feeling overwhelmed takes true effort on my part so I’m just going to treat tonight as a brand-new night, void of issues and just “get it done.”

To bed for me…can’t wait to snuggle under those warm covers…temps still below zero.

Chilly in New England

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

It is cold, cold, cold outside.

Single digits, but below zero with the windchill.  Definitely NOT my kind of weather.  So thankful for a warm and cozy home.

Since it was too cold to go outside for a walk, all of my efforts were concentrated inside today…and boy did I get a lot done!

–first of all, slept in! ¬†(needed it, and felt wonderful)

–coffee and blog reading, as usual

–wrote 4 blogs from back in 2012 (yep, I’m still catching up)

–filed (AGAIN!)–almost done actually!!!

–made Tortellini Soup for dinner

–arms/abs workout

–dyed my hair (medium auburn…need to cover all that gray)

–read a good chunk of my next book

–did all the dishes

–ate lunch while watching an episode of Will and Grace (fried egg, cucumber and tomato salad, glass of orange juice, small peanut butter tree)

Not bad!

Now I’m just relaxing a bit before dinner and hoping (fingers DOUBLE crossed for a good night at work).

I’m guessing it’s not a good sign that work won’t be that busy when I’ve already been called in for extra for both today and tomorrow (when I’m already working!)

I’ve stayed strong and not answered the phone. ¬†My three-day stretch off is very important to me. ¬†Not to mention that my last paycheck when I did stay extra was all messed up (meaning I got paid less OT than I should have) and I’m still waiting for it to be corrected. ¬†Humph!

Today started off with me being extra tired…somehow even though I was exhausted last night, I had difficulty sleeping and felt very unrested when Kimm’s alarm went off at 7 am…her LAST real estate class!

Coffee helped a little.

Once Kimm left, I tackled my most dreaded task…FILING.

I had a system…I took a big pile of papers and brought them to the dining room table…went through everything one by one, sorted everything into piles and then labeled all the piles…took them upstairs and filed what needed to be filed into the file cabinet.

The first bunch took about an hour.

Then I started with more…I could feel myself losing steam but I kept plugging away at it until Kimm came home…no time to actually file the remainder of the stuff, but I did have it in a semi-organized pile.

My next project will be to go through the file cabinet and make everything look NICE. ¬†I can’t stand ugly file labels and mine are definitely nearer to ugly than to pretty.

But that was enough for today…it was a huge accomplishment I felt since I have been putting off filing for oh, I don’t know, several months now!

The afternoon consisted of grocery shopping, dinner making (we finally had the Ramon Noodle Veggie Stir Fry that has been on our meal planner for about three months now…I always substitute it out with something else when the day comes to have it because I don’t feel like chopping all the vegetables #purelaziness.) ¬†I was glad we finally had it…yummy!

Now just catching up on reading/writing blogs…maybe some reading…maybe some napping. ¬†A movie is on the agenda for the evening.
