Happy Leap Year!

It’s memorable because we are getting snow…probably have a couple of inches so far and are due for a little bit more overnight before it is supposed to stop.  We may actually get to use our new snow blower this year yet!

I’m actually doing a “What I Ate Wednesday” ON Wednesday.  Even though I haven’t had my snack yet, it’s pretty set in stone, or really will be once I hit “post” on this blog 🙂

Breakfast

Coffee with 3 tbsp flavored creamer (French Vanilla) and a light high fiber multi-grain English muffin with 1/2 tbsp Country Crock and 1 tbsp each of peanut butter and blueberry jam

377 calories, 56 gms carbs, 10 gms fat, 9 gms protein

Lunch

One fried egg (in 1/4 tbsp butter) with a slice of American Cheese on top and 1/2 of a large sweet potato, roasted into sweet potato fries with 1 tbsp ketchup, with a small sugar cookie for dessert

I had a craving for a fried egg with American cheese and it did not disappoint.  The sweet potato fries were awesome…cut into strips, mixed in 1/2 tbsp olive oil, and sprinkled with salt and pepper, in the oven for 12 minutes at 425.

395 calories, 31 gms carbs, 25 gms fat, 13 gms protein

Dinner

Veggie burger (with tomato, lettuce, dill pickle, mustard and ketchup) on a bulkie roll and 1/2 cup brown rice on the side (with 1/2 tbsp butter).  For dessert, 1/2 a large orange and a small sugar cookie.

Tonight we were going to be going out to Olive Garden on a date night, but with the snow we decided to stay in.  I’m sure this meal was much better for me, health-wise, than the Olive Garden.

729 calories, 98 gms carbs, 26 gms fat, 31 gms protein

Snack

String cheese, 10 pretzels with 2 tbsp hummus, and 2 tbsps peanut butter

I’m in a peanut butter mood lately!

395 calories, 25 gms carbs, 13 gms fat, 19 gms protein

Total for the day…

1896 calories, 209 gms carbs, 74 gms fat, 71 gms protein, 27 gms fiber

I actually motivated myself enough today to get to the gym before the snow started really coming down.  I did some weights and then 1/2 hour on the treadmill…this time 2 min running and then 5 mins walking, alternating.   Much more doable than longer periods of running. I will have to work my way up to longer periods of running.

I also was able to do two loads of laundry, finish my February craft, and do some filing.  SUCCESS!!

And now I’m feeling a bit sleepy.  I’m thinking a nap is in my future before watching a movie tonight.

A Compliment

Last night when I came into work I took over an assignment from a nurse who I worked with briefly when I was on the Intermediate Care Floor.  I probably haven’t seen her since last year before Christmas.  But when she saw me she said, “You look really good.  Have you been losing weight?”  I told her that I had been working on losing weight and had lost about 14 pounds, which isn’t THAT much but I thanked her very much for noticing.

But I have to say, that compliment has REALLY stuck with me 🙂

And it has motivated me to keep pushing when I feel very much like things aren’t changing much.

Sometimes when you are in the midst of losing or trying to lose weight, you really don’t realize how much even just 10 pounds is.  It is A LOT of weight to lose.  We are talking two five-pound bags of sugar.  Try carrying that with you everywhere you go all day long and you’ll probably soon see that 10 pounds gone is a GOOD thing.

When I got home, I told Kimm about the compliment and I couldn’t help smiling when I told her…it was just nice remembering that someone thought I was looking good!  And then when I was on the computer, reading some blogs, Madeline (queen cat!) climbed into my lap and started to snuggle…she NEVER does that.  So Kimm took a picture and I asked to see it.  And when I looked at the picture…I could ACTUALLY see that I  have lost weight in my face.  I don’t hate how I look as much as I used to.

And this is a GOOD thing.

So I slept fitfully today and had a hard time waking up (I think it all relates to a frustrating and hurtful experience with a work colleague which is way too much to get into on this blog).

So I was still pretty tired when I woke up and I made dinner and kept thinking…”I REALLY need to get back to the gym…NO EXCUSES.” But of course, I didn’t want to go.

But I ate dinner, relaxed for just a bit, did the dishes, and then, EVEN THOUGH I DIDN’T WANT TO, I went to the gym.

And I had a pretty good workout.  My legs felt like they weighed 100 pounds each, but I just pressed on.

And when I left, I felt GOOD.

To think that I was so  motivated by a simple compliment that I’m sure this person had NO idea how much she made me feel like all my efforts ARE making a difference.  This is why I feel it is so important to really let people know when you think something nice about them.  You have no idea how much a simple recognition could raise their self-esteem.

Now I hope that my motivation does not wane!  I have about 8 pounds to lose until I hit my 10% goal 🙂

Now I’m about to relax and catch up on Parenthood with some snacks…can’t wait!

What makes ME beautiful??

Well, I have to say that this is not a question that I think about often…mostly because I never associate that word with me.

When I think of something or someone beautiful I generally think of an inspirational quote, a breathtaking moment, gorgeous facial or body features, a touching moment between loved ones, the amazing wonder of nature…

So I have to really think…

what makes me beautiful…

...is my kind personality–I truly don’t like other people to not feel good about themselves and I will often build up other peoples self esteem, even at the expense of my own

...is my tender heart–I believe that there is good in everyone and I look for that good and am disappointed when I am proved otherwise

is my ability to love even in the face of disapproval or shame…it’s not easy to love another person with all your heart when so many people in the world call it wrong

No one has ever said to me, “you are beautiful” and I have blamed my weight for that all my life.   But that stops now.

Today and every day past today I am taking action to help make the “outside” me as beautiful as the “inside” me 🙂

A beautiful day full of sun 🙂

I’ve been plugging away at getting some stuff done considering this month is almost over and I’ve got to work the next two days.

Did some filing…made good progress.  My goal is to now get my personal filing done this month (which I should be able to do) and then NEXT month focus on filing all of my NURSING stuff.  That will be quite the chore as I’ve accumulated lots of stuff from work, ACE days, CEUs, nursing magazines.

I also worked on my February craft!  Which I forgot to even blog about my January craft, but I will when I get the February one done.  I only have one more part to do which I’ll do on my next day off.

And now I have a little bit of time to read before showering and making dinner.

It’s been a good three days off…

The scale was DOWN today 🙂

Another 2.4 pounds down.  An overall down of 13.8 since January 1st!

I’m still ahead of my 1 lb/week goal, but I know it will only get more tough as the months progress.

Goals til my next weigh in:

Drink 3 (instead of 2) large bottles of water/day

Go to the gym on my days off!!!!

Walk Izzy on my days off!!!!

Try to research some lower calorie lunches/dinners (that still have some substance to them!)

Today I finally washed the bed sheets.  That’s been on my “to do” list FOREVER.  Now I just have to keep up on it.  And I filed some stupid paperwork.  Which I also need to keep up on.  It’s never-ending.

For fun, we watched four episodes of Grey’s Anatomy…on to season 5!  And a movie with popcorn tonight!!

What a cold, dark, gray day.

Woke up to a blanket of snow covering the ground which melted away with a steady drizzle of rain.

The lights were on in the house all day.  They had to be…it was so DARN dark!  It was the perfect day to just stay in your pj’s and veg on the couch.  But unfortunately Izzy had an appointment at the vet to get her nails cut.   Which she did VERY well–a much better experience than last time.  At least there were no bodily fluids excreted during the nail cutting 🙂  And she was wagging her tail when it was all done!  Another piece of good news…she was weighed and down 3 pounds from her last visit in September.   She weighed in at 66 pounds which is only one pound away from where the vet wanted her!  Now her mommy parents have to get going on their weight loss too!  I’m going to get on the scale tomorrow and I HOPE it is good news.  It SHOULD be since my pants and tops are fitting better.  But you never know what that number on the scale will be.

Just watched the first two episodes of Survivor online for this season while Kimm watched her game.  I’m starving so I can’t wait for our snack!

Wednesday fell again on a day that I worked, so here’s what I ate yesterday…

Breakfast

Same old…

English muffin (new kind…Light Multi-grain, Thomas, has a lot of fiber!) with Country Crock, all natural peanut butter, blueberry jam

Coffee with 3 tbsp flavored creamer

347 cals, 48 gms carbs, 10 gms fat, 9 gms protein

Lunch

Nothing as I was sleeping

Dinner

1/2 box of Kraft Mac and Cheese

2/3 cup frozen mixed veggies with 1/2 tbsp butter

1/2 large sweet potato, roasted in fry form (coated with 1/2 tbsp olive oil and salt and pepper), dipped in ketchup of course!

small bowl of sliced strawberries with sugar

a chocolate marshmallow treat that I got from my Secret Santa at work (still working on eating that Christmas candy!)

864 cals, 134 gms carbs, 28 gms fat, 22 gms protein

Snacks 

(at work)

1st snack at about 1:30 am–28 almonds and a slice of string cheese

2nd snack at about 4 am–Red Delicious apple and a slice of string cheese

411 cals, 28 gms carbs, 28 gms fat, 20 gms protein

Total for the day

1623 cals, 210 gms carbs, 66 gms fat, 51 gms protein, 25 gms fiber

And just to compare, Sparkpeople has my ranges (in order to lose 1 lb/week) at…

Calories 1460-1810   CHECK!

Carbs 164-194   CHECK!

Fat 32-70  CHECK!

Protein 60-158   A little low today…prob because I had the mac and cheese with no protein component for dinner

Fiber 25-35  CHECK!

Not too bad.

Got home and had breakfast after work and then went to bed but finished reading a great book (These Things Hidden) before falling asleep!  Rested my head at 9:30 am.  And then up again at 4 pm.  We headed to Kimm’s parents house for dinner and a movie.  Had pizza (never gets old!) and then I restrained myself and had two small sugar cookies for dessert (there were so many and they were SO good!).  Apple and peanut butter for a snack while watching The Legend of Billie Jean.  Then chatting during which I fell asleep (I get so tired on my first night off!)  Home late at 1 am.  Thankfully Izzy got to come with us this time so she wasn’t crated by herself at home…she loved being there 🙂

Time is passing!

I SWEAR the time goes by faster on days that I have to go to work!

It’s already 2:30 pm so I don’t have much more time before I have to get ready for work.

What has taken me the most time today…tracking my food on Sparkpeople.  But I know it’s worth it.

Also ran to the grocery store (bread), CVS (more cold medicine), laundry (always!).

And now I’m going to read.

BTW…we went out yesterday and it was CRAZY.  I swear every crazy person was out shopping on President’s Day.  We got a little frustrated, but were calmed with some retail therapy at the new dollar store in Agawam (not too many people there, score!) and a relaxing night at Barnes and Noble (where I would suggest NOT to get a light Frappacino…I guess I can really taste the horribleness of skim milk!…now I know never to order that again).

Two days on and then I finally get three days off again.  Have a great day everyone.

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Travel

Here we are already…2/3 of the way through the month!  Me thinks I need to hurry up a bit and try to accomplish a few of my goals!!

But for right this moment, I’m fully enjoying my second day off from work.

And here’s my weekly Friend Makin’ Monday installment…

Where did your most recent trip take you?

Hmmm…I guess I don’t travel as much as I would like to since I could hardly remember the last trip I took.  I believe it would be to visit my parents back home in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, February 2011.

Is there a place that you’d like to visit that you haven’t yet?  If so, where?

I used to want to visit lots of places, and I still like the idea of travel.  I just think the hassle of travel is overwhelming (getting tickets, determining where you are going to stay, planning the itinerary, where you will eat, dealing with rude people, etc).  Places I would love to see one day include…Paris, Ireland, and Holland.  Plus I think it would be cool to visit every state in the US.

Do you travel lightly, or do you cram as much into your luggage as possible?

I would LOVE to learn to travel lightly, but I find that I’m one of those people who travel with the mindset of, “well, I might need that…” and so I always end up packing too much.

Do your eating and exercise habits change when you travel?  If so, how?

My eating almost always slightly changes because I can’t usually eat exactly how I eat at home.  There are usually a few more indulgences, but I don’t try to over do it.  As far as exercise, I don’t do too much at home, and I don’t do too much when I travel…so it’s pretty much the same!

Talk about a place that you’ve been that you’d like to go back to.

I haven’t been too many places, but I would like to go back to Door County, where I camped with my parents as a child, Provincetown, where I’ve vacationed with Kimm, to Georgia, where a good friend lives, and to Canada, to see Niagara Falls again!

Do you prefer to travel at a certain time of the year?

I prefer not to travel when it is snowing, cold, raining, or hot!  So I think that eliminates a lot of the time 🙂  Seriously, I don’t have a preference as to when I travel!

If you had to choose, would you go to the beach or the mountains?

Beach!  I love to feel the sun on my face, get splashed by the waves, walk in the sand, have a cool drink, read a book and relax.

Have you ever needed a passport to travel?

Nope.  the only place I’ve visited that I would now need a passport for would be Canada and my cruise and those trips took place before you needed a passport to visit.

Do you collect anything in your travels?

Nope!  When I was on the cruise I got a shot glass of every place we went but I have gotten rid of most of them because I don’t like them anymore, I don’t drink shots, and they are more clutter than anything.

Where do you plan to go next?

???  Not sure.  I would LOVE to be able to go somewhere this summer even if it is just a day trip.

Sunny and bright.  I’m doing laundry and then I’m not sure?  Maybe a walk with Izzy?  We are planning to hit up Barnes and Noble tonight so that should be fun.
