Organ Donation

Saturday, January 21, 2012

What a night.  SO busy.

I was working with a patient who was declared officially brain-dead and who the family consented to organ donation.  Let me just say, I didn’t realize all of the work that was involved in taking care of a patient that may be utilized for organ donation.  They make it look so easy on TV.

I think the combination of the procedures, doing something I was unfamiliar with, and the loads of documenting and keeping information organized made for a very long, tiring and stressful night.

I was so glad to leave this morning.

And then of course what do I walk out into, but a winter wonderland.  The snow was falling fast.  I’ll have to get up early to shovel before work.

I’m SO done with snow!!!

Not much else to say.  I’m ready for bed and can’t wait for my two days off.

We got snow people.

Friday, January 20, 2012

Oh, HOW did it get to be 2/3 through this month already???

I believe I forgot to mention that the other day, the 16th into the 17th, we got our first snow of the year.  Of course I was working that night.  It was only a few inches, but STILL.  I don’t like snow!

I came home and shoveled since I still don’t know how to use that darn snow blower we bought.  I will have to learn this week I am thinking.

Anyways, it was not fun shoveling.  The snow, though minimal, was wet and heavy.  My neck and back were killing me afterwards and the next day.

And then last night, while we were at Kimm’s parents house it snowed again, another couple of inches.  Thankfully this time it was much lighter.  I shoveled when we got home since it was slowing down and I didn’t feel like getting up in the morning and shoveling.  I’m smart, right 🙂

So I’m glad I did that since there was really not much accumulation after that during the night.

But now I see that we are due for more snow tonight and tomorrow…tonight approx 1 inch, and up to 4 inches on Saturday into Sunday.

I guess I really DO need to figure out how to use that snow blower!

The morning today was spent writing blogs (trying to still catch up from last year!) and entering passwords in my iPhone (not so thrilling).  This afternoon will consist of reading my book 🙂  Much more fun.

I’m due to work two  nights and then off for two before starting an on/off pattern.  By the time it’s done this month will almost be over…

Money, money, money

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Spent a good portion of the morning getting bills paid.

Do you ever wish we didn’t have to deal with money?  Or just that you had more 🙂

Anyways, the day is trucking forward and I want it to slow down!!  I don’t want to have to go to work again tomorrow.

I’m posting early because tonight we are going to Kimm’s parents for dinner and a movie and I’m sure I’ll be tired when I come home.

Today was a good day so far–a fair amount accomplished.

Besides figuring out finances, I put a few more passwords in my password protector in my iPhone (takes longer than one thinks with having to check each of them out and determining if I still need that password), did a load of laundry, made lunch, did the dishes (with washing the animals bowls and the stove pan drip catchers (know what I mean??), and cleaned out some of Izzy’s room to get ready to make the room into Kimm’s office.

Now my plan is to relax and read for an hour, take a shower and head over to Kimm’s parents for a feast.  I’m just so excited I won’t have to do dishes tonight!!

Discouraging, but okay

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

I didn’t mention much about weight loss this week, seeing as THERE WAS NONE!!  In fact there was a slight gain, which is of course is always disappointing.

HOWEVER, I am okay with this.

I know that my weight fluctuates a lot during the month, especially with hormonal changes.  And I ate whatever I wanted on my birthday…which I am COMPLETELY okay with…life is to be lived after all.

And I did lose 8 pounds!  That’s freaking crazy and great.  And my goal this year really is only a pound a week.  So, when you think of it that way, I’m so ahead of the game 🙂

So changes I’m making regarding my diet…

…continue eating lots of veggies

…add in more fruits (an apple a day)

…adding in small amounts of carbs (ex: brown rice, whole wheat rolls, whole wheat crackers)

…drinking more water

And I’m hoping that these things, over the next few weeks will allow me to lose some more weight.

I’m trying to remember that it’s about the journey, not the destination.

Clean and Shiny

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

I dragged myself up and out of bed early today in order to go to my dentist appointment.

I have to say, the older I get, the less I enjoy going to the dentist.  I like the fact that my teeth get all clean and shiny, but my teeth and gums are so sensitive now that any bit of cleaning irritates them like crazy.

I was glad when it was done.

I made up for waking up early by taking a 3 hour nap on the couch.  And then I was still able to head to bed early.  Go me.  I have to say, I love feeling fully rested.

Split shift

Monday, January 16, 2012

And the month is half over.  Time keeps on keeping on…

Another 12 hours at work.   Four hours in the ER that flew by since it was so busy.  I couldn’t believe how fast it went.  Then back to the ICU where I had one ICU patient.   Which after an initial busy period actually gave me time to breath.

It was a nice shift, even though I keep getting so tired at around 2:30 am.  All the time now.  If it weren’t for my No-Doze, I would be in poor shape.  I hope this changes soon.

I’m reading a few blogs and then off to bed!

Back to Reality

Sunday, January 15, 2012

It is COLD outside.  In the negative digits with wind chill.

Today, the day after my birthday, means back to reality.

Laundry.

Dishes.

Work.

Good thing I have Kimm’s birthday to look forward to in a few weeks 🙂

39??

Saturday, January 14, 2012

Wow.  How did I get to be 39 years old??!!

I certainly don’t feel that old (on the inside anyways…my body seems to be saying the years are creeping on).

It’s no secret I love to celebrate my birthday.

Today I spent time doing things that are special to me (even though most of them are just common everyday things).

I enjoyed my morning coffee and English muffin while catching up on all my blogs.

I went to a movie (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and enjoyed popcorn and M&M’s.

I ate pizza (my favorite!) and had cake for dessert.

I read (and may have napped as well 🙂 !)

I had ice cream (another favorite) while watching Grey’s Anatomy.

I opened presents!!

And best of all I got to spend time with Kimm.

It was a wonderful day, although it went by WAY TOO FAST.

I can’t believe that next year I’ll be 40.

Maybe I’ll keep saying I’m 39 (my mom says that’s what Jack Benny always said…maybe he was on to something!)

Uneventful Friday the 13th

Friday, January 13, 2012

Here it is, we are just plowing through this month.

Work was tiring last night…my eyes were burning from 2:30 am on.  There was a little excitement with a patient from 5 am on that allowed me to just survive on adrenaline which was a good thing.  Unfortunately it made me have to stay an extra hour at work as well.  So by the time I got home this morning, I was really tired.  So tired that I fell asleep in the chair with Madeline on my lap!  Surprising since she hardly ever sits with me.  But she had to this morning because Kimm was off to her first house inspection with her client!  So no Madeline hair allowed on her nice sweater!

Anyways, a good sleep during the day was so nice.  Of course I still woke up tired, but when do I not?  I am already looking forward to my comfy bed tonight 🙂

It was a good night though…made Taco soup for dinner and then we got our butts out in the FREEZING cold to get to the gym.  Where I managed to lift some very heavy weights.  I know I got a good workout tonight because my arms were sore even washing my hair in the shower.

Now I’m just relaxing, reading some blogs and we are about to watch some Parenthood.  I think an apple with peanut butter sounds good for a snack tonight.

And then when I wake up tomorrow…it’s MY BIRTHDAY!!! (just sayin’)

Disappearing white stuff…

Thursday, January 12, 2012

The dreaded day finally came.  We had snow overnight.

BUT…the good news is that it was a very small amount (no more than an inch) and EVEN BETTER…it had pretty much disappeared as I drove home since the snow changed to rain.  Of course that means that everything is wet and it’s gray and cold outside, but…NO accumulation of snow.  I had to scrape my car but I didn’t have to shovel!

And now I’m heading to bed as soon as I drink my decaf coffee.  I got so tired overnight.  The eyes are definitely burning and I think sleep will be fast in coming.

I am SO enjoying Sing You Home by Jodi Picoult (my second book of the year).  I’m flying through it…she always seems to pull you in with her story lines and characters.

And isn’t it someone’s birthday in a couple of days??  🙂
