Open Houses

Sunday, July 31, 2011

Spent the last day of this month out and about looking at open houses…six of them to be exact!

Kimm is getting to know the market and so we went on a ride and GOT TO KNOW THE MARKET 🙂

All I have to say is there sure are huge differences in prices, cleanliness and clutter.  My opinion–price right, keep it spotless, and NO CLUTTER!

We saw a few that were really nice–charming with character–my favorite.  It’s kind of nice to keep an eye out to what is out there.

The best news is that Kimm met a realtor from her own office who is willing to go over “realtor things” with her step by step which is exactly what she needs!

So it was a productive afternoon.

Afterwards I hit the gym and now time to make dinner and then to work.

My dad says the doctor said he’ll probably be in the hospital for a few more days.  So I’ll have to give him a call in the morning after work.

Hope everyone else enjoys the rest of this gorgeous day 🙂

Last Night of my Unplanned Vacation

Saturday, July 30, 2011

Geez, doesn’t six days off just fly by!

Quick update on my Dad—he’s doing much better.  He got downgraded to a medical floor today.  He’s up and walking about with a walker…my mom says he’s a speed demon Smile  He’s going to be getting the IV antibiotics still today, but then they will be switching him over to oral antibiotics.  I guess my mom says his leg is still pretty red and swollen, but he hasn’t been running any temps.  I talked to him this morning and he seems back to his normal self…in fact this is what he answered back to me when I asked him if he was bored, “No, I’m watching some TV now, but you know, a man of my intelligence could easily get bored here.”  Typical Dad!

Today was just one of those lazy days.  I seem to have a lot of those and I’m grateful I do!

Slept in again…love!

Coffee and computer time.  I have to say that I am LOVING this new flavor of creamer I bought…Almond Joy…it’s like sipping a candy bar every morning.

Gym.  Fourth time this week.  I guess I made up for all my inactivity during the first three weeks of the month during this last week.  I again ran a mile!  It felt a lot harder today.  My legs just felt heavy.  But I pushed through anyways.  Felt wonderful afterwards.

Took a lovely nap this afternoon.

Took Izzy on a walk.

Tonight we are going to play a game again.  We bought “Scene It? 80s Version” at Saver’s for $2.99 and we both really like it.  Of course Kimm rocks the music questions and I’m all about the sitcoms!  It’s fun.

Have to get to bed early tonight because tomorrow is a busy day.  We’re heading out to some open houses so Kimm can get to “know the market” and then the gym and then it’s time to go back to work!

On a side note, I can’t believe that July is practically over!!!

On the Mend

Friday, July 29, 2011

So today was a much better day for my dad.  He did spike a fever during the night, and they had to re-draw blood cultures, but his blood work in the morning was better (white blood cell count was lower, which is good, meaning the body is able to fight off the infection with the antibiotics).

In fact, about a half hour ago my dad was down-graded to the general medical floor which is a very good thing.  He’s still very weak, but I talked to him this morning and he was able to make a full sentence Smile

I think just a lot of rest and recuperation are in his future.

As for me, I was a TAD bit disappointed today.

I was hoping to make it to the beach today but Mother Nature had other plans—plans which included a very overcast day with NO SUN and scattered thunderstorms.  You can’t do the beach in that weather.

So instead I washed the bed sheets, dusted the whole house, and cleaned both of the bathrooms.

That’s not a fair trade in my opinion!!

However, I may see about going to the beach tomorrow depending on the weather.

But I also have to fit in the gym.  I took today as a well deserved day of rest.  My muscles needed it!

But I’m actually kind of looking forward to going tomorrow.  I don’t necessarily WANT to go, but I know I’ll feel awesome when I’m done!

Plans for tonight—playing a game and watching a documentary—with healthy snacks—our weigh-in is coming soon!

A Scare

Thursday, July 28, 2011

So today started out being a pretty ordinary day.

We had slept in, got up and had our coffee and computer time.

Kimm was due for an online seminar at 11 am so I was going to call my parents since I haven’t talked to them in a while.

I had called home, got my mom on the phone and then she said, “here talk to your dad first” (I guess he was going to go take a nap).

When my dad got on the phone he was talking to me, but he just wasn’t making any sense.  He did manage to say that he didn’t feel too good.  And I said, “You don’t sound too good.  What’s wrong?”

And that’s when I knew something was wrong.  My dad was talking to me but he couldn’t even formulate a full sentence.  It was like he started the sentence and then forgot mid-way through what he was trying to say.

I immediately stopped him and said, “Put Mom back on the phone.”  And it was like he wasn’t hearing me, he just kept trying to say whatever he was trying to say.  So I repeated, “Put Mom back on the phone.”

Finally my mom got on the phone and I said, “What’s going on with Dad?”  She proceeds to tell me that he got up in the middle of the night and she didn’t realize he was up until two hours later when she got up to go to the bathroom and he was lying on the couch moaning.  Turns out he was dry heaving and he also had a high fever (102).  Then she mentions that his leg is warm and swollen and red.  I immediately think, “DVT.” Even though I know it’s probably more likely cellulitis

But I tell my mom, “Get Dad to the hospital now…go to the ER.”  She says to me, “Well do you think I should go to Urgent Care?”  “No, no, go to the ER.”

Later on she calls me to tell me that they ruled out a DVT but he does have cellulitis.  They did blood work and are giving him IV antibiotics.  He’s probably going to be discharged with oral antibiotics.

Until I get another call from my mom—my dad’s blood pressure dropped into the 80s and now they are going to admit him to the ICU.

What?

ICU is serious.

Thankfully the intensivist called me and explained everything.  Funny thing…he is a pulmonologist and actually got my dad started on the CPAP for his sleep apnea 14 years ago!  Turns out that my dad was diagnosed with sepsis.  Anyways, they did a chest x-ray which looked okay, his urine was okay, his blood pressure is stable.  He’s on three different antibiotics (Zosyn, Vancomycin, and Clindamycin).  He’s getting IV fluids.  They will be checking blood work tonight and then again in the morning.

If he stays stable throughout the night, he will be transferred to a general med/surg floor tomorrow.

I’m just glad he’s in a unit where he gets the extra attention tonight.

Turns out that the doctor was pretty amazed about the cellulitis—he couldn’t find one thing that would cause it (no scratches, no puncture marks…strange, huh?)

Both the intensivist and my dad’s own doctor (who came to visit him) said that it was good that he came in when he did.

I finally feel like all the knowledge I’ve garnered since becoming a nurse had made a difference.

I’m really hoping for a speedy recovery for my dad.

9 Years

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

Hello everyone!

Guess what?

Kimm and I celebrated our 9 year anniversary Smile

Wow, time sure flies!

I had specifically asked off for this day during this week and I just happened to get six days off in a row!  Talk about NICE!

For our anniversary we just kept things simple…

Coffee and computer time in the morning.

We both went to the gym—I again ran a mile—WHO AM I???  I’m so proud of myself, seriously!  Came home and showered and had quesadillas and fruit for lunch.

A trip to Saver’s in the afternoon to look around (a thrift store—Kimm scored big time—I think a total of close to 9 tops!!—I got a t-shirt and a long-sleeved fleece, we also got a BRAND-NEW game, Scene It? The 80s, for only $2.99).

Ordered out for dinner—we decided not to go out because we always get annoyed by the other patrons (usually either they or their kids are loud and inconsiderate).  We got cheese ravioli and side salads—yummy!

Watched a movie, The Roommate, with some popcorn (the movie had Blair from Gossip Girl in it and she played a wicked evil crazy psycho!)

I thoroughly enjoyed my day Smile

I ran a MILE!

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

So I did make it to the gym today Smile

Not right when I got up, because that is just way too early for me.   But I did go before lunch.

I was determined to go on the treadmill and lift weights.

Here’s what I did:

Walked at 2.5 mph pace for 0.10 miles for warm-up.

Ran at 4.5 mph pace (13.2 minutes/mile) for ONE MILE!!!!

Walked at 2.5 mph pace for 0.15 miles for cool-down.

Total of 1.25 miles on treadmill.

Leg extension—45 pounds, 2 sets of 12 reps

Chest press—60 pounds, 2 sets of 12 reps

Shoulder press—30 pounds, 2 sets of 12 reps

Triceps pull down—10 pounds, 2 sets of 12 reps

Abdominal crunches—1 set of 25 reps

And then I came home.  I was soaking wet with sweat.  Honestly, I couldn’t even believe that I ran for an entire mile.  I wasn’t even sure I would be able to do it.  But I just blasted my music and pushed through it.  Every time I thought about quitting I would think of Jillian from The Biggest Loser—I know she would say that I COULD do it.

And I did!

I’m going to try to get to the gym every day this week.  Hopefully that will counteract my not going for the beginning part of the month.  I’m hoping that a five pound weight loss this month is still not out of reach.

As far as the rest of the day, it was nice.

I slept in for once and it felt wonderful!

We bought a gift for a friend’s wedding that is coming up—all online so nice and easy.

There was a tornado sighting again in Springfield—it got real nasty here in the afternoon and poured!  Izzy of course went right away to her safe spot under the bed.

Tonight is unplanned as of now.  Maybe some CSI?  Or a game?

All I know is that it’s been a good day Smile

Done…and let it begin

Monday, July 25, 2011

I made it through my three night stint!!

Let my “non”-vacation begin.  I had asked off for one day this week for our anniversary and just happened to get SIX days off in a row 🙂  That’s what I call an unexpected bonus!

In other good news, I just heard tonight that one of the intensivists at our hospital was let go…he was one that really made you feel like you knew nothing.  So I can’t say I’m sorry to see him gone.

My first night off is just for relaxing–a movie and popcorn are on the agenda.

I have got to get my butt in gear this week to hit the gym and eat well since I have 10 days until I weigh in (I’ll be weighing in on August 3rd).  I haven’t made it to the gym AT ALL this month.  I blame it on the humidity, but it’s probably just plain laziness.  I wish I could motivate myself more.  Ugh.

I MUST have a plan.  I need to get the gym done early in the day so I’m not thinking about it the rest of the day.  That involves getting up early, which is going to be the rough part.

I feel as if I’m in a funk tonight.  I hope I wake up in a better mood.

Not much…

Sunday, July 24, 2011

…to say 🙂

I worked all 12 hours in IMC.

It was a busy night and I’m glad it is over.

Off to bed.

Two down, one more on and then SIX off!!!

I can do it, I can do it…

Irony

Saturday, July 23, 2011

I find it a bit ironic that I was sweating bullets prior to coming in to work and yet I was the coldest I’ve been in a long time at the hospital.

They must have really had the AC going.  I was bundled up in my sweatshirt and long blue tech coat and I was still cold.

Two ICU patients.  Done and done.

Sleep and more Chinese food on the agenda before going in to work tonight.

I don’t want to jinx it, but the heat wave seems to have slightly broke.  I don’t think it’s as unbearable outside this morning as it has been the last few days.

Back to the grind

Friday, July 22, 2011

Slept lovely in the AC last night.

Came out to a wall of steam.  The house is already hot.

The plan is to go over to Kimm’s parents this afternoon to sit in the AC to cool off (Izzy can come too!)

Then order out Chinese before work tonight to avoid using the oven to cook dinner.

The heat wave is supposed to break a bit tomorrow…only in the upper 80s instead of upper 90s!

I’m on for three.  I hope it goes by fast.  Why must we work??
