A Skating Rink

Monday, February 28, 2011

Driving home this morning was NO fun.

It was freezing rain.  Just getting to the car was a challenge.  Thankfully one of the guys throwing down ice-melt was walking in front of me on the sidewalks!  But the parking lot was another story…it was as slippery as a skating rink.

Thankfully the drive home was uneventful, but slow going.

And then I had to spend a bunch of time when I got home sanding the walkway.

Finally inside but cold and wet.

But waiting to drive Kimm to her appointment.

And I don’t even want to TALK about last night!  It was horrible.  Let’s just say that the first two hours of my shift were spent with one patient only and he was transferred to another hospital because he was having a serious heart attack.  Turns out he made it to the hospital okay, but then he coded in the cath lab!  The rest of the night was just as bad as I rushed to see my other four patients in the remaining two hours because, oh yeah, I was on IMC for the first four hours and then had to come back down to ICU.  GRRRRRR!!!!  It was a very frustrating night, not to mention I was TIRED and had a stomach ache.

Like I said, I was SO glad to get home.

Now I’ll feel even better when I get to crawl into bed for the day.  Not much sleep though.  Hopefully at least four hours.  Ugh.

Why do I do these things backwards???

Sunday, February 27, 2011

So here it is, the day that I have to go into work and of course THIS is the day that I try to get everything done.

Dishes.

Sweep floors.

Vacuum couch.

Clean bathrooms.

Brush Izzy.

Put away clothes.

Empty trash.

Clean out fridge.

Shave legs.

And probably more that I can’t remember.

But I really need to try to reverse this and do all this stuff the FIRST day I have off so that I can fully relax before going into work.  Instead I’ve been rushing around like a crazy woman trying to get everything done!

But it’s done.

Now I just have to work two days.

Kimm has her follow-up appointment tomorrow so that means not much sleep tomorrow.

Needless to say, I already can’t wait for my days off.

One of life’s little mysteries…

Saturday, February 26, 2011

Why do days off go by so fast?

I feel like I’ve barely had any time off and I’m due to go back in tomorrow.

I’ll never figure it out.

Today was an okay day.  I felt pretty unmotivated.

I did manage to wash the bed sheets (has been needing to be done for a while) and of course make the meals and wash the dishes (never-ending household chores).

While Kimm watched her hockey game I re-watched Seven Pounds.  I have to say, I didn’t like it as much the second time around.  Seemed kind of slow going.  But I still liked it.  I just think they needed a better editor!

Night.

Enter the Castle of Gloom and Doom…

Friday, February 25, 2011

That’s right.

We’re getting another hit from Mother Nature.

This morning was rain, rain and more rain.  My boots were soaked through with all the rain.  I guess they aren’t waterproof!

Then it started to snow.  Big, fat, wet flakes.  Lots of them.  And of course we didn’t go out and do our errands earlier because of the rain, so we were forced to go out in the snow.

Which turned to slush and then ice as the temps dropped.

It really wasn’t much fun.

I guess that will teach us to procrastinate!

But we HAD to go out.

We had NO dishwasher soap–and a pile of dishes.  And Kimm had no Breath-Rite strips left and she doesn’t like to sleep without them or else she gets wicked stuffed up.  Not to mention my library books were due and had already been renewed once and if I dropped them off tomorrow I would have owed a fine.

How do we get ourselves into these messes???

But now we are home.  Dishes are done!  Showers are taken.  And we shall commence to relax for the rest of the evening in our castle of doom and gloom while the wind whips outside.

Gloom

Thursday, February 24, 2011

It was supposed to be nice outside today, but it was just gray.

I miss yesterdays sun!

Another relaxing day in.

We made it through another season of ER.  Just saw Dr. Romano’s arm cut off by a helicopter blade.  Pretty nasty.  Not sure how I’m liking the show as the seasons go on.  I still like it enough to watch it, but I just don’t think I like it as much as I did in the earlier seasons.

My mom called earlier to let me know that my Grandma made it through her knee surgery okay.  That makes me very happy.  I’m going to give her a call to catch up on all the details.

Hopefully tomorrow will be bright and sunny!!

ER Marathon

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

Kimm and I have watched 6 episodes of ER today!

It has been a great day 🙂

We BOTH got a great night’s sleep which is super–this is the first night since Kimm’s surgery that she has actually slept well.

Then we had breakfast–I miss you English muffin and coffee. Time on the computer.

Of course ER!

I did do other stuff too–three loads of laundry, grocery shopping, making an amazing fruit salad (strawberries, blueberries, kiwi, banana, pineapple and grapes!), and making potato soup for dinner. It was so nice out today that I had the window down in the car while I was out driving!!  Spring is making its way here!!

It was just such a nice day.  I loved it!

(Can’t you just tell my all the exclamation points that I had a wonderful day!)

Ahhh…

Monday, February 21, 2011

I FINALLY have some days off 🙂

This makes me VERY happy 🙂

I did have to sleep for a little bit today, but I was up and at em’ by 3:30 pm.  Had to get ready for a get together with friends that we haven’t seen in a while.

We had a nice visit and then just watched some ER–we’re on Season 8!

It was a nice night but I’m really looking forward to my first full day off tomorrow.

My eyes are burning…

Sunday, February 20, 2011

Well, I made it through another night,  but I’m getting a little tired.

My eyes don’t want to stay open.

What is wrong with them 🙂

Seriously though, my trick of just saying, “only one more night” every night I go in worked.   Psychologically it was much easier to deal with than thinking four long nights.  And tonight I can TRULY say “one more night!!”

So yesterday our shed roof caved in!

So I guess we can get rid of that.  Good thing there was nothing in there.

And it was extremely cold and windy.  That tease of spring is a distant memory.

And we are due for 2-4 inches of snow coming up.  Ugh.

Winter, I dislike you.

Off I go to prepare dinner and psych myself up for another night.

Ticking by…

Saturday, February 19, 2011

The night just ticked on by.

Blood pressures every 15 minutes, urine output every hour, oxygen saturation, tidal volumes, heart rate.  Monitoring and marking and noting.

Stocking equipment, emptying trash, turning patients.

My mind is full of checking off “to do” for my patients and the unit as the night goes by.

Day 2 of 4 is done!

I’m using  a little mind game of pretending that I only have to go in for one night each night I go in.  So far it’s working.  It really is mind over matter!!

The weather has changed…its COLD this morning and no more melting slush…it’s all ice again.  Spring, I can hardly wait 🙂
