A Nurse, An Aide, and A Sitter…

…walked into a bar and…JUST KIDDING!

Last night was a tough night at work.

I really try not to complain at work, but sometimes that’s all you feel like doing.  I’m sure part of it had to do with the fact that I was overtired (holiday baking all day in the kitchen before going in with no chance to relax), but still.

At the hospital we have nurses, we have aides, and we have sitters.  But in the ICU sometimes you are all three.  Which let me tell you, really SUCKS.

Briefly, in order to protect my patient via HIPPA, my patient was status post trach (1st day), just off the vent (about 12 hours) and had a history of dementia.  So in case you didn’t know…new trachs are disgusting…LOTS of sputum, basically being thrown against the trach mask (for oxygen) and across the room if the mask gets moved!  So we’re talking coughing, and spit, and unable to communicate and peeing in the bed constantly because of dementia, but that’s not bad enough because every time he wants to pee he starts pulling at IV lines, NG tube (in his nose), taking off his Johnny, climbing out of bed.  I parked myself outside of his room all night long…changed his bedding approximately 7 times, wiped up more slimy sputum than I ever want to see again, and the guy STILL managed to pull out his NG tube at 7 am…where he’s getting his tube feed (can’t swallow) and meds.  ARGHHHH.  Talk about frustrating.  I worked for 13 hours with no real break except to run to the bathroom and guzzle some water.

And I haven’t even mentioned the other patients on the unit.  Everyone heavy.  Everyone needing repositioning every two hours.  My back and neck were KILLING me by the end of the night.

So I was doing aide work, I was sitting and watching my patient, and I STILL had to do all my nursing responsibilities.  Someone please tell me why nurses get paid so little??  I know people think they get paid a lot but if you did this job you’d soon see that it is nothing.

Okay, rant over.  So glad to have three more days off!

Still no snow which is FINE by me.

Christmas is in ONE WEEK…EEK!!!!
