Giving Thanks

Tuesday, November 30, 2010

It is already the last day of November.

Time continues to just fly by.

Today Kimm and I celebrated a completely new tradition…our own Thanksgiving meal.

On the menu: Green Bean Casserole, Cornbread Casserole, Baked Mashed Potatoes, Cranberries, Croissants stuffed with mustard and cheese, and ice cream sundaes for dessert (Rocky Road Ice cream with melted peanut butter, peanuts, and whipped cream for Kimm and Butter Pecan ice cream with homemade caramel sauce, peanuts and whipped cream for me).

My favorite was the cornbread casserole…so savory and sweet at the same time.

After eating we went through our “leading up to Thanksgiving thankfulness notes.”ย  It was fun to see which ones we had in common and which ones even we repeated ๐Ÿ™‚ –I guess we don’t have the best memories.

Here they are:

1) A comfy, warm bed to sleep in

2) The last of the beautiful, fall leaves on the trees

3) Songs that you can listen to over and over again and never get tired of

4) Lazy, rainy days

5) Poppy-corn (popcorn for people who don’t know MY language!)

6) Watching Brady Bunch DVDs

7) Sunny days

8) The smell of a flavored candle burning

9) My babies–Izzy, Charlie and Madeline

10) Going to the movies

11) Taking a long hot shower

12) Laughing!

13) Playing “Words with Friends” (a COMPLETELY addicting game on my iphone!)

14) Reading before bed

15) Early morning walks with Izzy and my sweetie

16) Sun (see what I mean about repeats…I must really like the sun)

17) Good co-workers

18) Reading a good new book!

19) Anticipation for Thanksgiving

20) A good, hard day’s work (LEAVES!!!–need I say more)

22) Memories ๐Ÿ™‚

23) The ability to dream of the future and the fortitude to make dreams into reality

24) Baking–especially the wonderful smell!

1) My wonderful family–Kaye, Izzy, Charlie and Madeline

2) A roof over my head

3) A night out with my sweetie ๐Ÿ™‚

4) A nice, warm home on a cold day

5) I finally figured out what I want to do career-wise and I’ve taken the first step toward achieving that goal!

6) Sunny days

7) Music

8) Public libraries

9) Curling up on the couch with a good book (I knew there was a reason I loved her!!)

10) Date night with my sweetie

11) Days off with my sweetie

12) Long, hot showers (see how we both like that one!)

13) I have only four more long boring classes left (I know this is kind of vague…but it relates to some exciting news for the future!!)

14) Days when I’m NOT sick (it was a rough month folks!)

15) Lunch dates with Mom

16) Taking a ride with Izzy

17) Naps

18) A very comfy bed

19) Reading a motivational book

20) Doing yard work with my sweetie

21) Hot showers (I think this may be her first repeat…she must have been cold and dirty!)

22) Watching movies during the day

23) The holiday season and the excitement and special feelings that come with it

24) The life that we’ve made together…I love you sweetie! (and I love you too!)

So what do you think?

I think that I am pretty damn lucky and blessed.ย  Reading this list makes me realize even more how much I am loved and how much I don’t have to worry about the basics in life–I have shelter and food and a way to earn money to buy the things I need and even a lot of stuff that I don’t necessarily need but that add to the joy of my life.ย  And for that I am EXTREMELY thankful.

Bring on December.ย  It will be hectic, but full of fun ๐Ÿ™‚

A Visit to the “Old Hood”

Monday, November 29, 2010

Kimm and I headed back into Holyoke today to visit some old friends.

First we had to check out our old apartment–no lights so not sure if it is rented or not??

Then we had a lovely visit with friends that we normally see only yearly.ย  They are so nice so we definitely should try to make it together more often.ย  We got to see their gorgeous trees–all 6 of them!! (there is a Betty Ford one–decorated with martini glasses and empty booze bottles!, a Mickey Mouse one, a classic blue, Country Woodland…and more).

Then on to dinner–two new places in two days…wow.ย  We went to Carrabas–classic Italian…our favorite part of the meal was the fried zucchini sticks for the appetizer and the chocolate mouse with coconut and pecans for dessert…stuffed again!

Now relaxing and going to have some eggnog.ย  I am beat.ย  (Oh yeah…on our trip out to Target we got a beautiful wreath for the front door!!!! LOVE IT!!)

Bruburgers–The Good and the Bad

Sunday, November 28, 2010

Kimm and I had a date night tonight–to celebrate getting through the busy work week I just had (the on/off schedule really tired me out and made for a tough week of spending time together).

Kimm had researched a new restaurant near us that had some vegetarian friendly options–Bruburgers (primarily a burger joint but they had fried green beans which we wanted to try, and veggie burgers).

So, the verdict:

For appetizers we ordered the fried green beans and mac and cheese bites (fried tender bites of mac and cheese)–both were EXCELLENT!ย  Yumm.ย  The fried green beans were SO tasty–and I loved the spicy dip with it…Kimm not so much ๐Ÿ™‚ย  The mac and cheese bites were also very tasty.

For our meal we both ordered the veggie burger which came with sliced avocado, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, and salsa…sounds good right?ย  THE WORST THING I HAVE EVER EATEN AS A VEGETARIAN!!ย  I wish you could have seen Kimm’s face as she was chewing her first bite!ย  And then she said, “This tastes like dirty bathwater.”ย  Priceless.ย  I tried to eat at least a little bit more than one bite by dousing it in the salsa and then ketchup, but it was just horrible.ย  I had to stop eating it…life is too short to eat bad food.

So we ate our appetizers and the fries that came with the burgers–the fries were really good too.ย  And we were stuffed with just that.

Funniest thing…so when the waitress asked us how our meals were, I basically said, the burgers were gross and I didn’t think that anyone would ever order them more than once…then she looked at us with a confused face and said, “Oh really, I think they are pretty good and eat them all the time here.”

I guess people really do like different things.ย  I guess that’s why some people like seafood and I want to barf when I think of it ๐Ÿ™‚

But she was wicked nice and took the burgers off the bill for us (TOTALLY not expected, but COMPLETELY appreciated).

So I think we will be back, but ONLY for the appetizers and fries ๐Ÿ™‚

It was still really nice to get out and do something.

Plan for tonight…watching Christmas movies, eating popcorn and having the first eggnog of the season…bliss!

Happy end of the weekend!

UGH.ย  I am NOT ready for the cold.ย  It’s in the 20s and I was shivering all the way home from work…even the heat from the car did not wake me up!

Can’t wait to crawl into bed.ย  Last night at work was super slow and it made me SO tired.

Black Friday Reduction

Friday, November 26, 2010

Most people go out shopping on Black Friday to get more stuff.

Kimm and I stayed in and went through our Christmas decorations and got rid of stuff ๐Ÿ™‚

We were able to part with two boxes of stuff!

Not too bad.

We also listened to our first Christmas music of the season–we went traditional with Elvis Presley and Nat King Cole.

And we watched some holiday decorating shows on HGTV with Izzy snuggling right in.

It was a nice, relaxing, day after Thanksgiving.

Now I’m getting ready for work…two on, then THREE off.

Mmmmm, mmmm good!

Thursday, November 25, 2010

I can’t believe that Thanksgiving is already over!

The meal was VERY good.ย  I ate my fill and my belly is stuffed ๐Ÿ™‚

My favorites: stuffing, brown sugar glazed carrots, and cheesy broccoli casserole.

I just want to say that although there are a lot of times I feel like many other people are more lucky than me or have more than me or just seem to have things better or easier than me, I KNOW in my heart of hearts I am truly blessed.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by loved ones.

Applesauce bread–done.

Brown sugar glazed carrots–done.

HUGE sink full of dishes (x2!!)–done.

I still can’t believe that Thanksgiving is tomorrow.

Only 12 hours of work and 7 hours of sleep stand between me and a wonderful meal with loved ones.

May everyone have a great Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Shopping

Tuesday, November 23, 2010

Well, our Thanksgiving shopping is done for this year.

Thank goodness, because there were quite a few people at the store and those aisles are not wide enough for that many carts ๐Ÿ™‚

Tomorrow I will do my baking/cooking before going into work.ย  And then I work for 12 hours and then it’s Thanksgiving!

I can’t wait to have some good food and a relaxing night.

The only thing that would make it better would be being able to spend time with my family.

Well, I’m off to watch a movie and then to bed.ย  We have chips and dip for a snack tonight.ย  YUM!

BTW…does everyone know that Prince William and Catherine Middleton are engaged???ย  Due to be married next Aprilย  Now that is a wedding that I will definitely want to see if they air it on TV!!

In the middle of the day.

**postdated for Monday, November 22, 2010

Today we watched a movie…in the middle of the day!

That is so UNLIKE us.ย  We always watch our movies at night.

But you know what?

It was really nice just snuggling up on the couch, on a cold, gray day and watching a movie.ย  I really liked it.

So what movie did we watch?

Schindler’s List.

It had been a long time since I saw that movie and it really can tug at the heart-strings (as well as make you pretty confused!).

Can’t wait to do this again ๐Ÿ™‚

Leaves DONE

Sunday, November 21, 2010

After 3 and 1/2 hours, the leaves for this year are done ๐Ÿ™‚ย  19 bags.ย  Whew.

The yard looks great and I know we both feel a great sense of accomplishment for doing a job well!

We had a wonderful meal afterward–chicken parm with spaghetti, corn, and cheesy garlic bread, with apple pie for dessert.

Tonight we went to see a movie–The Next Three Days.ย  AWESOME movie.ย  We got to use our free passes, but got wicked ripped off with the snacks–$10.50 for a medium popcorn and medium drink–WHAT!

Soon off to bed because this turkey is tired ๐Ÿ™‚
