And September is gone…

Thursday, September 30, 2010

Oh, the months just fly by, don’t they?

I can’t believe that it is already going to be October.

Let’s just say that today went by in a blast–it all started with getting up early to go to that ED computer training.  I don’t know HOW people get up that early!  My eyes were burning and my stomach was in a knot.  Not to mention I was starving but felt like if I ate, I would hurl!  And even when I did eventually eat, I was hungry not a half hour later.  Crazy.

The weather was something else today as well–pouring rain, super windy.

I got to catch up with a nap 🙂  But I’m still tired.

Now on for my exciting news…well, it’s not THAT exciting…just to me!

Starting in October, I’m going to take each month and focus on goals that will help me try to be happier!  I was inspired by the book The Happiness Project.

So for October, my goals will be: to make myself healthier so that I will have the energy to be happier.  There’s nothing worse than being dead tired and trying to be happy (hello, today!).  So I have a few goals…it will be a month-long project, so I’m not expecting perfection, just progress.

**HYDRATE–drink 8 oz of water for every hour I am up (this is going to be a tough one as I don’t really care for water that much!)

**REST–get at least 8 hours of sleep per night (minimum!!–I’d love to be able to get 9 hours if possible)–and I’d like to try to get to bed earlier so I can get up a bit earlier

**MOVE–I would love to get to the gym four days a week, at least for weight training, even if for nothing more–I need to build up my lean muscle mass so that my metabolism starts revving!

**EAT–I want to focus on whole, minimally processed foods, and especially cut down on sugar and carbs…concentrate on fresh veggies, whole grains, and nuts and their butters

I can’t wait for this month.

Who else is up for the challenge??

Another day at the Big E

Wednesday, September 29. 2010

Oh boy–my feet are sore 🙂  Guess that’s what a night of walking around the Big E will do for you!

It was so crowded today.  It probably didn’t help that we had rain for the last two nights and today was Agawam day (all the school kids got free tickets).  We had to wait over a 1/2 hour just to get in the gate!

Food:  slice of pizza, fried veggies, chocolate gelato (TO DIE FOR!!), fried dough, and lemonade.

Goods: rain jacket for Izzy (blue), fudge (chocolate peanut butter and cookies and cream), and a painting of Paris.

Not too bad.

Just wish that people weren’t so RUDE and PUSHY.  I have to say this was my least enjoyable time at the Big E.  Hopefully next year will be better 🙂

It’s off to bed for me soon.  I have to be up early to go to a computer class at the hospital.  BIG DISLIKE.

Three what, you might ask??

THREE admissions last night.  That is an all time high for me!  Usually I always expect to get one or two, but THREE!  Yikes!  Needless to say, it was a very busy night.  But i still managed to get out on time 🙂  And then went out to breakfast with the girls–fun!

Can you believe that this month is almost over?

I have something special planned for next month.  But you’ll have to wait to find out what 🙂  Keeping you in suspense…

So excited for a night off.  A night on the couch relaxing with my sweetie is on the agenda.

Pouring down

Monday, September 27, 2010

Rain, that is.

What a drive home.  The road conditions were horrible…driving 45 on the highway. Was so glad to pull in the driveway.

I guess the garden got a good soaking.

Well, even though I didn’t get a nap yesterday, my shift at the hospital was fine.  I helped one of the CNAs study for her quiz in maternity–brought back a lot of memories and also made me realize how much I FORGOT (it’s true…if you don’t use it, you lose it).

Bed is calling my name 🙂

I HATE paperwork

Sunday, September 26, 2010

Today I finally got all the paperwork filled out for my car accident.  Took me about 45 minutes…TOO LONG in my opinion.   But necessary according to the state of Massachusetts.  Now I can send them out tomorrow.

Can I also say that having only two days off is not that great either!  I don’t know how all normal people who only get weekends off do it!  Of course they are probably not working 12 hour days, so they have a bit more time on the days that they do work.  All I know is that today felt wicked rushed.  Up at 10:00 am (8 hours sleep), walked Izzy, and back for breakfast.  Then I did a quick clean of the bedroom, dining room, kitchen and living room–swept (TONS of dog hair), dusted, picked up.  Still took about an hour.  Then off to the grocery store for a few things, got gas for Kimm’s car and filled up her tires–they always get low and she is driving to Boston tonight for another concert.  After coming home and filling out that stupid car accident paperwork, there is just a little time for writing my blog and NO TIME FOR A NAP 😦

I’ll read a few blogs and hop in the shower at 4 pm.

Thankfully we have leftovers for dinner.

Back to work for two nights and then THREE off 🙂  We’re heading to the Big E again!!

I Heart Pizza!

Saturday, September 25, 2010

How did the end of the month creep up so quickly??

I can’t believe it is almost October.

Today was a pretty nice and relaxing day.  Slept in (had to since I got in so late last night!), went for a walk with Kimm and Izzy, had a comforting breakfast of toasted English muffin with peanut butter and jelly, and don’t forget COFFEE 🙂

And then the best part–PIZZA for dinner.  I think we have finally found a new pizza place that we really like.  Unfortunately it’s quite a drive–back in Holyoke.  Why can’t there be any good pizza places here in Agawam?  Seriously.  But our pizza tonight was so good.  Mmmmm…and the best part is that we have leftovers for tomorrow!

Watched a movie–28 Days (an old Sandra Bullock movie) and then Kimm’s parents stopped to drop some stuff off and visited for a while.  Soon…bed!

Back to work tomorrow–Boo…not too happy about that.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.

Out having fun

*postdated for Friday, September 24, 2010

I had no time to post yesterday because I slept all day, then got up and got ready to go out!

I met up with friends from the hospital to celebrate a co-worker’s son’s hiatus from Iraq/a CNA’s baby shower/my original preceptor’s impending leave from med-surg to the OR.  Whew!  That was a lot of stuff going on!

Basically we met at a Polish hall that was rented–there was food, beer and music.  I actually tried a beer that I didn’t hate–Coor’s Light.  Towards the end of the night we headed to a bar that was within walking distance.  Danced and drank some more…by the time I got home, it was close to 3 am!

I’m not used to being out so late.  But it was nice chatting with everyone–I LOVE the people I work with.

And guess what!  I decided to take the ICU position.

So there will be more learning going on in the next few months.  Hopefully everything will be settled down by the new year.  It’s always nice to feel more comfortable and settled in your work environment, but I know I will be feeling nervous and scared for a little bit now.  I just keep telling myself…”they don’t set you up to fail” and “you are as smart as anyone else on ICU” and “in a few months, you won’t even remember all this.”

Yay for new opportunities!

ICU Shadowing…

Thursday, September 23, 2010

So I got to shadow again in ICU last night.

I *THINK* I will say yes to going down there.  It should be a good learning experience, even though the learning part is not always fun.  But who says life is all fun?  Everyone needs to step outside their “comfort zone” every once in a while.  So why not now?  As my nursing supervisor said to me this morning, “We’re not setting you up to fail.”

I have to keep in mind that nursing is not a solo job.  There is always someone there to help you.

I will think on it a few more days, and then make up my mind.

Decisions, decisions.

Can’t wait for bed!!

First Day of Fall Accident

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Yep, Kimm and I were involved in a slight fender bender today, approximately 1:15 pm.  We were heading out to do a few errands and just as we were about to turn right, less than 500 feet from our destination, the car behind us rear-ended us.  What happened was that it was a yield for me, and I happened to see a truck at the intersection and wasn’t sure if it was going straight (towards me) or turning, so I put on the brakes…the guy behind me said he saw me look but he saw the truck with his blinker on to turn so thought I was going to keep going.  Resulting in said accident.

Thankfully no one was injured, although I think that my neck is a little sore and Kimm says hers is too, but nothing major.  We called the cops.  Get this…at first they weren’t even going to come!  They said that if the damage looked to be under $1000 (like, how are we supposed to know that!) then they usually don’t send someone.  Well, the guy’s front bumper had quite a bit of damage (really nothing to mine…mostly cosmetic I’m thinking) so we called again and they finally sent someone out.  Not that he did much.  Took 15 minutes to fill out a one page sheet just with our exchange information.  Everything else about the accident we have to fill out and send a copy to the police department and the city.

Then of course I had to call my insurance when I got home.  It’s going to be a little bit of a process to get it appraised and wait to see who they determine is at fault (definitely should be him!).  If they don’t decide that way, I’m not paying to get my car fixed.  It’s drivable and looks to be minor cosmetic damage to the rear bumper.

I’m almost afraid to go into work tonight…usually when something like this happens, the bad luck continues on.

So much for a nap this afternoon.

Stupid accidents.

We are Vita-Mix Owners!!!

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

That’s right, baby.

Kimm and I treated ourselves to a Merry Christmas early 🙂

It was our first day at the Big E and I think we did pretty good.

The loot included:

–1/2 pound of peanut butter fudge (Kimm)

–1/2 pound of penuche fudge (me)

–kettle corn!

–2 gorgeous prints for the office (postcard size–yellow lilies and red poppies)

–a new winter jacket for Izzy (red, lined with red/brown/blue plaid)

–a Christmas collar for Izzy (green with candy canes!)

–and the Vita-Mix!!!!!!

Did you know that a Vita-Mix can not only make smoothies, but also soups, dips, ice cream, hummus, nut butters, flour, bread, and SO MUCH MORE.

This is actually something we have been thinking about for quite a while, but we were convinced after sitting through the demo and tasting all of the yummy concoctions 🙂

As far as eats of the night…we had a piece of pumpkin fudge, a cider donut and cold cider, and a piece of pizza.  I guess not that much when you think about it…then again, we had all those samples at the Vita-Mix stand–three kinds of smoothies, tortilla soup, a juice and ice cream.

Can’t wait to use the Vita-Mix!  The best part is how simple it is to clean.

Some busy days ahead…
