Gluttons for Punishment

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

It was a busy day for us today.

We primed the ceiling of our porch.  Let me just say…I don’t particularly like painting when you have to continuously look upward.  Tends to give you a neck ache!

It took us about 45 minutes to prep the room (take out the bistro set, the plants, the decorative items, and put everything else in one spot covered with plastic) and another 45 minutes to actually paint the primer on.

Not too bad me thinks.

Of course I forget to mention that it was so FREAKIN’ hot.  I mean, sweat was running down my legs.  Getting into my eyes.  My glasses would hardly stay on my face.  So it was a long 45 minutes.

But we did it.

It looks so much better, even before painting the actual color.  The only thing that I’m not too fond of is that the little slats are kind of uneven and therefore it doesn’t look 100% great.  Maybe some caulking would have helped.  But it would have taken FOREVER to do that since there are about 200 “in between” the slat areas that would have needed attention.  I just have to keep reminding myself that it is only the porch.  No one will be staring at the ceiling.  In a few weeks, I won’t even remember me thinking about it.

This too shall pass.

I guess it’s just the perfectionist in me.

We were hoping to get the paint on today as well but with the hot, humid weather, the primer did not dry in the one hour that it said it would and by the time it was done drying, it was too dark to paint.

So we will attack that tomorrow.

Fun, fun.

I can’t wait to sweat that much again.  Who needs a sauna 🙂

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Only one more day left!

Tuesday, July 20, 2010

Until my vacation that is!

I have off Wednesday and Thursday, work Friday and then have off for NINE days 🙂

I can’t wait.

Tomorrow Kimm and I are planning on priming and painting the ceiling on the porch before our new ceiling fan gets installed.  Hopefully it won’t be too hot.

We went for a drive tonight and it was so peaceful and relaxing.  Izzy loved it too!  The weather actually cooled down a bit and there was a delightful breeze.  So nice to just drive around and look at houses and see areas you haven’t seen before.  And of course I saw a lot of ice cream stands, but we are being good so none for us!

Just about ready for bed.  The eyes are slowly closing.

Two more days left!

Monday, July 19, 2010

Only TWO more working days until my first summer vacation.

I have to work tonight and then Friday night.

But last night went by SO fast that hopefully I’ll be on vacation before I know it 🙂

I have to say, as much as I feel rushed on busy nights, the time really does fly by and it is much preferable than to a night that creeps by.

Off to my air-conditioned lair 🙂

Short Day

Sunday, July 18, 2010

Wow.  It’s already 1:30 pm.

We slept in until about 10 am.  Went on our walk.  It was hot, humid and disgusting.

Home for coffee and breakfast with computer time.

The only other plans for today include a quick grocery trip and possibly the gym.

Then work.

So as you can see, not much to today.

BTW.  I LOVE plums.  I think they are becoming one of my favorite fruits 🙂

Hope everyone has a great rest of the weekend.

Over the Rainbow…

Saturday, July 17, 2010

There was a gorgeous rainbow outside tonight.  Kimm caught it all on camera 🙂

It was actually a double rainbow.  I haven’t seen rainbows in like, forever.  I like rainbows!

I snuck outside to take a look and went barefoot.  Ow!  Our walkway is not barefoot-friendly!  I went over to the grass…double ow!  Also not barefoot-friendly!!  My feet must be extra sensitive.  I remember as a little kid running around barefoot ALL THE TIME.  I guess I’m not a kid anymore 🙂

Made it to the gym for a great workout!  We were both sweaty when we were done.  Home to shower and to eat this…

I made the recipe up.  SO GOOD.  Definitely will be at least a weekly dish around here in the summertime.

Make this.  You will be very happy.

It is super simple.

Simple recipe:

1 can black beans, rinsed

about 1 cup frozen corn, cooked for about 3 minutes

1 small onion, diced

1/2 red pepper, diced

1 small tomato, diced

handful of cilantro, chopped finely

dressing–

approx 1/3 cup olive oil

juice of one lime

hefty pinch of cumin

salt and pepper to taste

–shake dressing well in covered jar or mix well in small bowl–pour over mixture and stir well–makes two good servings–top each serving with 1/2 avocado, diced–rub tummy and say YUMMM…it’s THAT GOOD!!

Then I whipped this up…

Our apples were kind of getting soft.  Our fault.  With all this heat, we should have kept them in the fridge.  But what’s the harm in an apple crisp.

I made this recipe up too.   What’s up with me creating all these recipes lately??  I’m a kitchen goddess I guess 🙂

Another simple recipe:

8 apples, peeled and sliced

4 large spoonfuls sugar

zest and juice of one lemon

ground cinnamon–couple of good shakes

–place apples in 8×8 glass pan–cover with sugar, zest, juice of lemon and cinnamon–mix well–cover with topping

topping:

approx 1 cup oatmeal (I used the rest of what we had…didn’t measure it!)

approx 1/3 cup brown sugar

1/2 stick butter

–cut the butter into the oats and sugar until well combined–cover apples completely–bake in a pre-heated 350 degree oven for 30 minutes–enjoy–best with ice cream but we are trying to be good and so had to enjoy on its own–it’s still good, just not GOOD–ice cream is the bomb!

So back up to yesterday.

Here are our new sneakers.

Hers (Kimm)…

and hers (mine)…

We wore them on our walk this morning and at the gym and we were both mighty pleased.  No pain in the ankle for me like the last pair I bought and have not been able to wear.  So maybe it will be Nikes for me in the future.  They definitely have a flatter arch which helps.

And our bedroom…

Geometric…

Double geometric…

All together now…

I’ve never realized how difficult it is to take good “room” shots until today.  I kept shooting the camera hoping that the next shot would look like a catalog picture…but nope!  I guess that’s why there are professional retouchers 🙂

Anyways.  We LOVED sleeping in our new bedding last night.  So comfortable.  The sheets were so silky smooth!  Love that feeling.

We’re going to watch a movie tonight…Along Came Polly.  Hope it’s good.

Can’t believe this is my last night off.

But…

only THREE more working days until my first vacation!!!

Can you tell I’m excited 🙂

On the go…

Friday, July 16, 2010

Today has been go, go, go for me since I’ve gotten up.  I’m just now finally relaxing 🙂

After Izzy’s walk, I had only a short amount of time before I had to hop in the shower and get dressed for my dentist appointment (another cavity filled).

Then once I got home Kimm and I headed out to Kohl’s to try to find some new gym sneakers.  We like to try to go there first because when there is a good sale, it can be a lot cheaper.

Guess what?

We both were in luck.  We both got a pair of Nikes.  I haven’t had a pair of Nikes in SO LONG.  Usually because they run so small.  Kimm got a pair of white/purple/silver, size 7 1/2 women’s, and I got a pair of gray/white/orange, size 11 men’s.  What a difference in sizes, huh?  We both had difficulty buying shoes, but for totally opposite reasons…my feet are too big and her’s are too small!

Unfortunately Kimm’s were much more expensive than mine–$65 for her, $40 for me.

Then we decided to just wander the store a bit.  Happened to look at the bedding, not expecting anything, but WE FOUND NEW BEDDING.  That we both like!!!!  This is amazing.  It is a geometric print (which I was surprised I liked) in tones of blue and brown.  And some funky, cool sheets as well.  All marked down.  We got the comforter (which is reversible) and the sheets for only $150 ($100 off!).  I can’t tell you how happy we both were!

Back home for lunch…mushroom veggie burgers, brown rice, and veggies and dip on the side.  SO GOOD.

Then we spent the next hour or so picking out paint colors for the front porch–the floor and the walls.  It took us SO LONG.  First we had different ideas of what we wanted, and then when we started to narrow it down, we still had a hard time picking the “right” one.  But we finally did it.

So then it was off to Home Depot to get the paint.  While we were there we also got new chain pulls for the ceiling fan in the kitchen…makes a world of difference.  Much more classy.  Not to mention they hang lower so now Kimm can actually reach them 🙂

After we got home (again!) we both took showers and I popped our favorite frozen pizza in the oven.

Watched a House while we ate and now the whole family is enjoying relaxing in the living room.

Oh yeah, let me modify that.  The whole family except Izzy–she’s up in the air-conditioned bedroom.  She becomes quite anti-social when there is AC on upstairs!

It was quite disgusting with the heat/humidity today and still no break in sight.  This is a record for sure.

Pictures of stuff tomorrow.  Promise.

Over an hour!

Thursday, July 15, 2010

Today I walked for 1 hr 5 min on the treadmill.

Now that may not seem like much to some people, but it was a lot for me.  The bottom of my left foot was killing me at the end.

The reason I was on for so long (normally I do 1/2 hour) was because there was a wedding cake challenge on the Food Network and I didn’t want to miss it!  A good incentive to keep walking, eh?

According to the machine I burned close to 450 cal.  Of course I think I ate that back when I got home because I was famished 🙂

The month is almost half over and I’m still working really hard at trying to lose weight and be healthier.  Hopefully I meet my 10 pound goal!!!

Have a great night all.

The Best Intentions

Wednesday, July 14, 2010

So I really had the best of intentions today.

I wanted to go to the gym today after work.

So I got my bag all ready–sneakers, clothes, ipod.  Brought a water and snack for before.  Talked about it all night.

But then when I got into the car and was driving home, my eyelids got so tired.  I realized that I haven’t slept for almost 24 hours.  How if I went to the gym I would have to take a shower when I got home and then another when I got up from sleeping.

And then I decided that I think I will go to the gym on days I don’t work.  That will be 4 days a week–16 days a month…more than half the days of the month.  I think that’s definitely more doable.

I guess my mind got ahead of my body.

When you are tired, it’s really not the best time to work out.

I’ll have a better workout on those days when I’m prepared for it physically.

So I’m going to go to bed now and then go to the gym tomorrow.

As a side note, it’s raining but it hasn’t affected the heat or humidity.  My glasses still fogged up after I got out of the car this morning 🙂

Have a great day.

The Daily Forecast

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

It ain’t pretty.

Every day for the next 10 days is supposed to be above 90 degrees.

Which basically means–there has not been a break from the heat since the start of this mess of hot, humid weather.

It’s starting to wear us down.

It ain’t pleasant when you take Izzy for a walk in the morning and you are dripping sweat down your face and back before you’ve even left your property.

Or when you get into your car and you practically burn your arms on the metal part of the seat belt.

People, we’re getting cranky!

Thank goodness for popsicles.  They are the only thing keeping me sane 🙂

Off to work for two nights and then three off.

Plus I have another trip to the dentist to look forward to on Friday.

Hope it’s cooler where you are…

Back to the Gym

Monday, July 10, 2010

I finally got back to the gym today.

I had been going well when we first joined back up, but then I got distracted. It was hot.  I didn’t feel like going.

But at the beginning of this month I made a decision.  I need to start doing–eating better, exercising, getting off the excess weight.

So what motivated me?

I just FEEL tired.  I know the excess weight is making a huge difference.  Have you ever carried those 40 pound cat litters?  They are HEAVY.  Just imagine two of those strapped to your body all the time.  That’s what I’m dealing with.  I just can’t take it anymore.

So we’ve started eating better.  More fruits and veggies and real foods.  We’ve done really good with that for the first part of the month.

Now I’m adding back in the exercise.

Of course, I didn’t feel like going today.

But I did.  And I think it’s going to have to be a daily decision.

Even though we’ve had Izzy for over 9 months, most days I don’t feel like taking her on her walk.  I’m tired when I first wake up.  Often the weather is not that great.  And I’m hungry.  But I get out there and walk her because IT NEEDS TO BE DONE.

And that is exactly how I need to approach the gym.  It just needs to get done.

And it will.

Today I did 1/2 hour on the treadmill, weights–arms, 60 sit ups, 10 minutes on the bike–we were at the gym for an hour.

When we left I was dripping sweat as if I’d taken a dip in the pool!

But I felt good.

You always feel good AFTER you go.

So I’m just going to have to force myself to go.

My goal was to lose 10 pounds this month.  I’m going to push myself as hard as I can.

My reward…$10 for every pound I lose…to be spent on clothes 🙂

Wish me luck.
