Stay-cation Day 8: Sick (but still enjoying my time off!)

Saturday, July 31, 2010

It could not POSSIBLY be the end of this month, could it?

Wow.  This month of sauna-like weather has seemed to go by so fast now that it’s gone.

I’m so grateful that the past two days have been GORGEOUS 🙂

So yep, Kimm and I are sick.  How the heck did that happen?  I mean, it’s the middle of summer!

went to bed feeling a bit under the weather and then woke up at 6 am not being able to breathe at all.  Sneezing too.  So I took some Contac, used the nasal spray and came down to the couch to read waiting for all the medicine to work.  I eventually could breath again and then took a nap before Kimm got up.  She was all sniffly too.   Sigh.

But we both got a lot accomplished again today. Even with being sick.  We are hard-core I guess.

I cleaned the upstairs bathroom.  Deep cleaned.  Meaning I scrubbed the floor.  It’s like a totally different color now!  My fingertips hurt from pushing the sponge around on the floor.

I also made mac and cheese for dinner.  Holy yum.  Such a good meal.  With snickerdoodle blondies for dessert.  Heck, I am on vacation.

Kimm did laundry–we have lots.  And vacuumed the porch.  And we got the porch all set back up.  Until the next time we have to move everything out when we paint.  But that’s not now and we wanted to enjoy our porch while we could with the new fan!

I’m still going to try to put away all my clothes tonight and organize my drawers???  We shall see.  I have a Smirnoff Ice to help me through it.

And we’re going to watch a movie.

Oh goodness only one more FULL day off.

BTW..I have 34 mosquito bites on my right leg/foot and 21 on my left leg/foot.  Most of them are itched raw already.  And Kimm did not get a single one.  Life just doesn’t seem fair sometimes.

Stay-cation Day 7: Cooking and Cleaning

Friday, July 30, 2010

Today Kimm and I feel so ACCOMPLISHED!

I don’t know what was in me, but I just felt like cooking 🙂

Probably because it was such a gorgeous day.  In the 70s, sunny and breezy, and hardly any humidity!

For lunch I made vegetable soup.  I love vegetable soup.  I kind of make it up as I go along each time.  Today’s had onion, celery, carrots, garlic, sautéed in a pan.  Then I added vegetable bouillon cubes and water.  Salt, pepper, Mrs. Dash.  Let it simmer for about an hour.  Then adjusted the seasonings, added some egg noodles and let it simmer for another 30 minutes.  Paired it with some Pillsbury French bread that Kimm’s mom had given us a while back.  Was so good.  And have enough for lunch tomorrow.

During the afternoon Kimm attacked the lawn–mowed, weed-wacked, weeded.  I did inside stuff.  Deep cleaned the downstairs bathroom.  Washed all the kitty litter boxes.  Cleaned the stove.  Cleaned the kitchen ceiling fan (GROSS!).   It doesn’t seem like a lot but I was busy all afternoon.

Then cooked more for dinner–I made Stir Fry sauce to put over lots of veggies–broccoli, carrots, onions, peas, water chestnuts, green pepper.  With brown rice.  It was so good.  Probably tasted even better because we had worked so hard.

I did the dishes three times today!  That’s way too many times in one day.

Then tonight I just felt like making bread.  Dragged out the bread machine.  Not sure if I want to keep it anymore and figured I would test it out again.  We had gone through all the kitchen cupboards getting rid of stuff we didn’t need/want.  Got rid of so many plastic containers!!!  HATE those things.  Definitely prefer the glass containers–don’t stain, smell, or create chaos in your cabinets.  We were not sure about keeping the bread machine.  I think I just have to use it more.  Would be nice not to have to knead the bread.  I shall try out a few recipes and then we will make a decision.  Tonight I made a whole wheat bread.  Already the house is smelling good.

I’m about to take a shower and then read.  I picked up Eat, Pray, Love and am really liking it so far.

I can’t believe how fast my nine days off are going.  Isn’t that always how it is?

Stay-cation Day 6: Tears and Cheers

Thursday, July 29, 2010

Well, yesterday I didn’t have time to post because we were out pretty late–didn’t get into bed until past 2 am.

First on the agenda was our neighbor’s funeral.  It was a dreary, rainy day.  There’s something fitting about it being like that when you bury someone.

The funeral was okay.  I haven’t been to that many funerals in my life.  I thought the minister was too dramatic when he was talking.  Totally made me want to laugh and not focus on why we were there.  But then when his daughter (who we both know) got up to say a few words, well, that was when we lost it.  Both of us had tears streaming down our faces.

We elected not to go to the cemetery.  I always feel like that is more personal and for family.

Later that night we went for a ride in the car with Izzy-Bear.  It was beautiful out.  It cooled down and we had the windows down and just drove!  Went to Windsor Locks in CT.  Then back.  When we arrived home, that’s when we saw a bunch of our neighbors across the street, talking and drinking and they invited us over (this was at the house of the neighbor whose dad had died).  So we grabbed our drinks (all we had was Smirnoff Ice–Kimm is out of her beer!) and chairs and headed over.  Had a few Chocolate Covered Cherry shots (so good–chocolate “cups” filled with cherry Jell-O shots made with chocolate vodka!).  Talked a lot.  Remembered our neighbor.  Drank to his memories.  Got bit by SO MANY mosquitos!  Those buggers love me.  I think I have 20 AT LEAST.  So itchy.

It was a good way to end the night.  When we got into bed I think I fell asleep immediately and I slept so good.  All I remember is waking up feeling SO rested 🙂

Stay-cation Day 5: One of those days…

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

I haven’t mentioned it in prior posts this week, but Kimm and I are making the transition to getting up earlier this week.  However, we are still having trouble with the getting to bed earlier part!  Thus, I think today it all caught up with me!!

Up at 7:30, walk with Izzy, coffee and computer time.

Ate lunch (leftovers from Olive Garden).

Then I started to get VERY sleepy.  Which resulted in a 2 hour nap!

When I got up I got SUPER FRUSTRATED with my STUPID games on Facebook.  Let’s just say that lately I’ve been having trouble logging on to Farmville (and Petville and Yoville…basically all of the Zynga games) and today just took me to the edge.  I’m sorry, when you try close to 20 times to log in…and NOTHING!  Not to mention I was in the middle of rearranging my large farm and it looks like shit and I had planted some crops that needed to be harvested.  I was PISSED.  And I was pissed that I was pissed about a stupid GAME.  So I basically just said, “That’s it, I’m done with this. It’s not worth my time and my emotions.”  Which was good.  I was spending too much time on a stupid pretend game.  I need to spend time on my actual life.  Of course that still made me angry and upset.  I LIKED that game (when I could log on!).  Oh well.  Let’s just say it made me in a very bad mood.

Then we had to get ready for the wake of our neighbor who passed away.  Nothing like getting dressed up when it is SO HOT out.  I was basically dripping sweat as I was getting ready.  And since I was already irritated from the Farmville fiasco, it made me even in a worse mood.  Thankfully taking a shower helped me calm down, but did absolutely nothing for cooling me down.

We got there about 10 minutes after it started and there were already quite a few people.  It was scheduled from 4-8 pm so the family had a long time there.  Of course we lost it.  There’s just something about hugging someone who has just lost someone close to them that really brings on the tears.

We ordered Chinese food afterwards.  Got the usual, “ten minutes” for pick up time but of course it took more like 20 minutes so I was standing inside the sweltering restaurant waiting for the food to finish being ready.  That of course did not help my mood at all.  And then it just got worse when I got home and saw that they left out the white rice that goes with the Sesame Tofu we ordered.  See what I mean!  When one thing goes wrong, it all seems to go downhill.  I think we may try another Chinese place in the future.  Even though the food is good, there are a ton of Chinese food places and maybe we can actually find one that doesn’t mess up a simple order.

After eating I was tired again.  Resulting in a nap on the couch.

The plan is to watch a movie tonight.

I really hope tomorrow is better.  This is my vacation, darn it!

Stay-cation Day 4: 8 Years

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

A really wonderful day.

A perfect day for an anniversary.

Can you guess what our gifts are?

Kimm is going to get a wheelbarrow!  She’s been wanting one for a long time.

I’m going to get a laptop cooling pad.  That way my lap doesn’t get to be 100 degrees while I’m on the computer!

The day started as usual–a walk with Izzy and coffee.

Lunch included some fresh from the garden produce (green beans and cherry tomatoes)–I chopped them up, added some red and green pepper and our last avocado, mixed with a garlic mustard vinaigrette.  Tasty, especially paired with a veggie burger.

Can you tell I like ketchup? 🙂

A trip to the library ensued.  Supposed to be air-conditioned but it was hotter than heck.  So quickly headed home.

Dinner was our old standby–The Olive Garden.  We always get the same thing–salad, breadsticks with Alfredo dipping sauce, 5-Cheese Ziti, and Lemon Cream cake for dessert…plus we added in a glass of white reisling wine this time.  Yummy, plus leftovers for tomorrow.

A nap (lovely!)….and then…

Barnes and Noble!

We joint purchased a book–Jillian Michael’s Master Your Metabolism.  And then ended the night with Mocha Coconut Frappacinos.

Back to eating healthy tomorrow 🙂

Bed is going to feel so nice.

Stay-cation Day 3: House Work

Monday, July 26, 2010

It’s been a long day.  Mostly because it began with getting up at 6 am!  We are NOT used to that.

But it was up and at ’em because today was the day that we got the work done on the house!!

Heating fan for upstairs office = $250

Exterior fan for screened in porch = $80

Two men to install such fans, as well as baseboard heating in the upstairs bathroom = $1,080

Finally being able to have heat on the ENTIRE upstairs = priceless 🙂

This was the first MAJOR work we’ve had done on the house.  I consider “major work” to include anything over $1,000!

It’s so great that we got the heat, however, it won’t really effect the resale value of the house considering most houses generally come with heat on all levels.  But knowing how we’ve suffered on the second level for the past two winters, I know we’ll really appreciate it come winter.

So here are the pics:

Fan on porch…we choose to have the light wood panel face downward (it’ll look so good when the walls are painted and the furniture is back on the porch)

Fan in upstairs office–absolutely love the black with the silver!

Baseboard heat in the bathroom–no more freezing cold bathroom runs in the middle of the night or shivering as you step out of the shower!!

The wall thermostat that programs the baseboard heat (so much easier to save money with better control)

It took them about 7 hours for installation.  But they had a beautiful, breezy day for it.

After they left and we ate, we still had more work to do.

It was time to empty out the basement of a bunch of stuff that we were getting rid of.  Every once in a while there is a group that drives around the neighborhoods and picks up stuff that people donate.  Of course it is tomorrow and we had to get all the stuff outside.

It was a hot and sweaty job.

I can’t believe how much stuff we are getting rid of.  It feels SO GOOD.  I just want to get rid of more stuff 🙂

We’re going to spend the next month trying to go through even more stuff in the basement and upstairs.  I’m all about getting rid of the clutter!

After all that, it was time to relax.  We had breakfast for dinner (scrambled eggs, blueberry muffin, and apple slices with peanut butter) and called it a night!

Stay-cation Day 2: A Day of Rest

Sunday, July 25, 2010

Don’t they always say Sunday is a day of rest?

Well, it was for us today!

Felt so good to just do pretty much nothing.

Slept in, went for a walk with Izzy and had our coffee.

Stopped in to our neighbors and found out the wake will be on Wednesday night and the funeral Thursday.  Thank goodness.  We were really thinking that it might have fallen on our anniversary (Tuesday).  Now that would NOT be a way I would want to remember our 8th anniversary.  They seemed to be doing pretty good–lots of remembering and laughing.

We did hit the grocery store for a few things and I impulsively bought some chocolate milk…YUM.  I’ll have to have some tonight.

We’re planning on watching another movie tonight.

We have to get up wicked early (like 6 am) in order to be ready for the guy who is working on our house tomorrow.  Not really looking forward to that.  I think we may get some iced coffees to make it all better 🙂

Have I mentioned yet how much I love stay-cations!

Stay-cation Day 1: The Good and the Bad

Saturday, July 24, 2010

What a nice feeling it was to leave the hospital this morning knowing that I was going to have NINE glorious days off!

But, when I arrived home, I saw our neighbor’s daughter at our front gate.  Turns out that her father, our neighbor, (the one that kept his car in our garage for close to 6 weeks, and the one who’s had multiple heart attacks, strokes, and respiratory problems), passed away.  What a shock.  We just saw him the other day when we were on our walk with Izzy.  He was sitting outside and he was SO happy to see Izzy–he has always loved her.  He always said, “How’s our little Isabella?”  He was like the only one that ever called her Isabella 🙂  And Izzy really liked him too!  So I’m glad that the last time we saw him he was smiling.

Of course his wife and daughter were a mess.  They’ve had visitors all day.  I’m sure we’ll find out tomorrow about times for the wake and funeral.  What a way to start a vacation.

The only good thing is that he’s not suffering anymore.  I remember the past couple of times we saw him we would always ask how he was doing and he would always say, “Not good.”  His breathing problems prevented him from doing so many of the things he loved to do.  Which was very frustrating for him.  So now he’s free of that.

Thankfully we’ll always have memories. I know he really always treated us like granddaughters, looking out for us.  It’s a good feeling.  I just hope his family will be able to focus on the good memories as well.

So it’s been a pretty low-key first day of vacation.

We did get pizza out–veggie pizza from Parthenon.  Haven’t had that in like forever.  Tasted so good.

And we’re going to watch a movie tonight.

A nice, relaxing start to the week.

Vacation, I hope you don’t go by TOO fast!

Friday, July 23, 2010

Kimm didn’t get home until almost 2:30!  I guess she had a good time 🙂

I was in bed by 1:30, but not asleep.  Made good work of Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol.  Just a little bit left, which is a good thing since it’s due at the library next week.

Unfortunately, I didn’t sleep long enough (about 6 hours) or well enough (kept waking up and staring at the clock!) last night for my liking.

So I’m sleepy today.  Not good when a night of work is on the horizon.

But it’s been a lazy day.  And I’m going to take a nap.

A Night on My Own…

Thursday, July 22, 2010

I’m here by myself tonight.

Kimm is off to the Big Bad Bollucks concert.  I’ve seen them twice this year and really didn’t feel like going.

So what did I do…

Well there was a lot of this:

Did you ever watch that show as a kid?  I guess I’m trying to relive my youth 🙂  I was obsessed with the Brady Bunch when I was a kid!

All the seasons are only $10 each at B.J.’s which is MUCH cheaper than anywhere else online.

We finished painting the ceiling today.

But since I’m so neurotic, I’m going to caulk and touch up those areas that have spaces between the slates.

It’ll take a lot of time, but I’m sure it will be worth it in the end.

Here are some pictures thus far.

See what I mean about the spaces between the slats?  Kind of distracts from the nice, new paint!

We had an awesome lunch–Zucchini Grinders (sautéed zucchini with pasta sauce, on a roll, toasted with mozzarella cheese) and on the side, some sautéed green beans and peas from our garden–our FIRST picking 🙂

And just because I haven’t shown any cute pictures of the kitties lately…

Charlie inside the water bottle container…

Madeline inside the dish strainer…

We dropped off newspapers and other miscellaneous stuff at the animal shelter today and they were so grateful.  Of course we took a look around–all the kitties and pups there are so cute.  It’s just so sad to go there and know that all the animals need loving homes.  Thankfully there were lots of people there today–hopefully lots of animals will have new families!

I have to say, it’s quite lonely by myself.

I can’t wait to see Kimm again. At least I have my Izzy bear to keep me company 🙂

Only one more night to work and then NINE off!!!!
