More to make me sore!

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

WOW.  It is the beginning of June already.  Time is flying.

Woke up sore, as I expected.  But the garden looks great 🙂

Here’s what we got (left to right)–

Row 1:  Big Boy tomato, and 2 cherry tomato plants

Row 2:  Better Boy tomato plant and cucumbers

Row 3:  1/2 spinach, 1/2 lettuce

Row 4:  1/2 yellow squash, 1/2 zucchini

Row 5: peas

Row 6: green beans

Row 7: carrots

Row 8:  one green pepper plant, scallions, and radishes

* Don’t you love our cute little butterfly–found it at Home Depot–LOVE it!

Just because…here is a picture of our rose bush in the backyard behind the garden…it’s actually using the tree next to it as a trellis this year!

After some coffee and breakfast Kimm and I attacked the front porch.  Opened all the windows, vacuumed, and de-cluttered.  Took us about two hours.  We were soaking wet by the time we were done…so humid today.  But the overall result is what we like…it’s so much more open.  All we want to do now is get some plants and put up the lights.  Of course it would look 100x better if it was painted, but we probably won’t do that until the fall.  That’s okay though…at least we’ll be using the porch this year.

That’s the new bistro set on the right, and on the left are two wrought iron chairs that we had stored in the garage.

And on the other end we have our recyclables and a bookcase for storing “stuff.”  Not very aesthetic but necessary.

We just ate…basically a repeat of our Memorial Day meal…

Veggie burger, baked beans, and potato salad.

Corn on the cob 🙂

Now I’m trying to relax a bit before work.

I’m going to have some of this…

With ice cream!

I’ll be up for close to 24 hours by the time I go to bed tomorrow morning.  I’m tired just thinking about it.

Memorial Day 2010

Monday, May 31, 2010

So long as there are men, there will be wars.–Albert Einstein

I wish that we didn’t have to have a holiday to remember all those that have died in wars.

For those that have died to maintain my freedom I’m grateful.  For those that have died in useless, stupid wars, I wish for smarter government.

Today was a great day.  The best part–the garden is in!

No pictures today since it was getting late and I was dang tired!  We went to Home Depot to get some more garden soil, manure and peat, as well as the tomato plants and a bell pepper plant.

We also came out with a BISTRO SET!!!  For a great price–$70.  It was the floor model (last one) and they were not offering it online.  So getting it just seemed like it was meant to be.  This is much more affordable than any of the other ones we were looking at.  And it fit in our backseat!  Pictures to come.  We’ll finally be able to sit out on the porch 🙂

Our Memorial Day meal was pretty traditional…veggie burgers, potato salad, corn on the cob, baked beans, veggies and dip, and some potato chips/Doritos.  Then cherry pie for dessert!  Yumm!

One really interesting thing that we found out tonight while we were outside putting in the garden…Izzy likes the water coming from the hose!   She was running up to it to drink it and get dunked by it and she was barking and barking…we heard more noise from her tonight than we have since we adopted her!  Kind of crazy.

Ended the evening with a good movie…great, unexpected ending.  If you get a chance, rent it.  It’s called Nothing But the Truth.

I am so achy right now.  My back and legs are going to regret all the garden work tomorrow.  But I’ll forget all about it when I taste those veggies from the garden.

Nurse Jackie

*postdated for Sunday, May 30, 2010

The good news:  After we finished watching Gilmore Girls (still LOVE after about the 3rd time watching the entire 7 seasons), we found something to watch that we both really like–Nurse Jackie.  We got it through Netflix because it’s a Showtime series.

The bad news:  Only the first season is out and it’s only 12 episodes.  So we’ve already watched them all!  It’s only been on the on the air for two seasons.  Not sure when the second season will come out on DVD.

Conclusion: We will need to find something else to watch and soon.  I believe we are going to try Weeds next.

Had a relaxing first night off.  Went to the store to pick up food for our Memorial Day meal.

Came home and made home-made potato salad.  The house smelled so good!
