Just a Thought…

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

Why does stuff always seem to accumulate??  I have managed to pick up two rooms today, but still need to pick up two more.  Arghh…

And the bathrooms…they need to be cleaned.  Why do things get dirty again so quickly!!!

And why do days off go by so fast?  No fair!

I guess this was more than one thought.  Oh well.

On for two days then off for two.

Can’t believe Easter is this Sunday.

And that tomorrow is April already.  Yikes.

Off to take a quick nap.

Just When You Thought It Was All Fine…

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

So last night was my first night orienting on nights.  I was supposed to be with my preceptor, but of course she was not there.  So I was with someone else.  It was a frustrating night.  I don’t really feel like I learned all that much, which really irritates me.  I only have two weeks on orientation before I am on my own, which means only 6 days, of which one is gone.  Grrr…

And then, just as I was getting ready to leave this morning, I find out that we have to attend a short meeting because all the IMC nurses are going to be cross-trained for the ER.  Without even our permission.  Really sucks.  So we had to go to a meeting that was only supposed to take about 30 minutes, to discuss the paperwork that needs to be done in the ER.  Well, the meeting was useless, and lasted 90 minutes.  I was EXHAUSTED.  And during the course of the meeting the lady talking to us tried to make us feel like we should be grateful that we did not get a raise because no one was laid off.  Okay, I’m glad no one got laid off, but is it my fault the hospital is in financial ruins??  I don’t think it’s too much to ask for a cost of living raise each year.  No wonder they are losing more and more nurses (I heard another nurse is going to Baystate when I was working last night).

And then to make matters even worse it was POURING when I got out of work and I was soaking wet by the time I walked to the car.  Then I took Izzy out and of course she will not poop in the yard!  So after about 15 minutes walking in the rain she finally pooped and I could come home and get into some dry clothes, vent to Kimm and climb into bed.

Ugh.  That’s all I have to say.

Time for some popcorn and Gilmore Girls.  I’m on for two nights starting tomorrow.

Back to Nights

Monday, March 29, 2010

Seems like this month will be going out soaking wet.  It’s been raining ALL DAY LONG.  And we’re supposed to get even more rain for the next few days.  We’ll be floating away shortly.

Let me just say, it’s not very fun to take a dog for a walk in the rain.  Hard to balance the leash, the umbrella, and the poop bag!

I find it near impossible to believe that I saw a robin just yesterday.

It’s been one of those laze around in your pajamas kind of day.  That’s what we did.  Watched the end of Season Three of Gilmore Girls.  I’m reading the new Kristin Hannah book, Winter Garden.

And tonight I have to head back into work.  At least I’m back on nights.  But I really don’t feel like going in.

I really wish that I didn’t have to work.

Okay, rant over.

It’s only one night so I’m sure it’ll go by quickly.  Then one night off and two on.  I’ll just concentrate on one day at a time.  Always best.

Home Show

post-dated for Sunday, March 28, 2010

I saw my first robin of the season today!! Always an exciting event.  I can’t truly consider it to be spring without seeing a robin 🙂

Nothing too much going on today except that we went to the annual home show.  It was CROWDED.  Hint:  We don’t like crowds.  But we made our way through.  Another not so nice thing…why do they feel the need to charge for parking and an entrance fee when the vendors are paying rent and possibly getting our business??  Seems greedy-like.  Story of America.  At least we got free parking and $3 off of our tickets each with some coupons.  We knew what we wanted this year so we weren’t as googly-eyed over all the different vendors.  We got some information on windows, sheds, landscaping, and heating.  Met some nice people who didn’t push things on you, and also some who did.  HATE THAT.  We were there for a couple of hours and were glad to go and return to our serene retreat at home.

Our MAIN goal this year is to get new windows for the upstairs (8 in total).  You really have to prioritize when you don’t want to put stuff on credit cards.  I can TOTALLY see how people can go into debt making their house pretty.

That’s all.  The weekend was over fast 😦

Resting

Saturday, March 27, 2010

Can I just say how NICE it was to sleep in today! 🙂

Both Kimm and I had a wonderful night of sleep.  It was hard to crawl out of bed.

But then I got to join them for their morning walk.  I haven’t been able to go for a whole week!  It was chilly out, but the walk felt good.

Then fresh-brewed coffee and some glazed donuts.  Yummy!

The remainder of the day was spent doing not much.  It was nice to rest.  We did head out to Barnes and Noble just to look around.  I got another Jennifer Chaveroni quilt book.  LOVE those books.

Tomorrow we are heading to the home show.  Hopefully we’ll find some way to heat the upstairs this next winter.  And a cheap way to re-do our driveway.  And a way to re-level our yard.  And good windows for cheap.  And maybe a shed? Or a patio area with pavers… I’m thinking we may be over-budget just thinking about these things!  Well, it doesn’t hurt to look and have the information.

More resting for me now…I foresee a quick nap for me during the rest of the hockey game…

Did it!

Friday, March 26, 2010

I made it through all my day training!  Whoo, whoo!

Today was ESPECIALLY hard getting up.  So dark and it was raining too.  Hated driving to work.

Funny too because all of the day people are like, “come work with us on days!” and I just don’t know if I could do it.

Regardless, I’m back to nights next week.

I feel wonderful knowing that I can sleep in tomorrow, go on a walk with my girls, and enjoy a couple of cups of coffee without rushing out the door.

Good night all.

Dysrhythmia class…day three…and PASSED!

Thursday, March 25, 2010

I made it through the dysrhythmia class!

Today we finished everything–talked about ventricular rhythms–the LETHAL rhythms such as v-tach and v-fib.  At the start of the morning I didn’t think that I would be able to pass the post-test, but by the time the afternoon came, I felt more confident.

Believe me, just passing this test doesn’t mean I’m done learning.  It just means I passed the minimal standards for this hospital in order to work on a monitored floor.  The real work will come with interpreting rhythms on a day-by-day basis and understanding the physiology behind the production of that rhythm and the appropriate intervention, if anything, for each rhythm.  Over time this will definitely make me a better nurse.  I’m excited about that!

Only one more day until I go back to nights!  And tomorrow is an early one again.  I must go to bed soon since I have to get up at 5 am.

I can’t wait for Saturday and Sunday to SLEEP IN 🙂

Dysrhythmia Class…Day Two

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

I am SO glad I only have two more days on days.  My body can’t handle all of this getting up early anymore.  Ugh.

Today in class I felt completely awful.  Tired.  Stomach ache.  Hard time thinking/remembering.

And I still have homework to do and tomorrow more to learn and the test.  Ugh again.

Today we learned about heart blocks, junctional rhythms, and PVCs.  Tomorrow we cover ventricular rhythms (the most lethal) and pacemakers.

I must go use my callipers and measure rhythms.  MUST PRACTICE.

Can’t wait for the weekend.

There’s nothing like that mirror in the dressing room…

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

…to make you feel FAT.

Can you tell that I attempted to go summer clothes shopping tonight?

Was not fun.  I guess when you wear scrubs and sweatpants the majority of the time, you really kind of forget what your body really looks like.  I have lots of rolls of fat.

Guess I’ll be making a more concentrated effort to lose weight again.

SO frustrating.  Especially when I feel I don’t eat THAT much.

In other news…Kimm got seven (!) pairs of shorts 🙂  I’m very happy for her.  She rocks them all!

Only three more days on days.  Thank goodness.  I’m really tired of getting up early as I’m sure everyone reading this is tired of me complaining about it.

Maybe I’ll squeeze in one more Gilmore Girls before bed.

Dysrhythmia Class–Day One

Monday, March 22, 2010

I have three days of dysrhythmia class this week.  And I’m done with the first one.  We covered sinus rhythms and arrhythmias arising out of the atrium (ex: atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation).  I REALLY like learning this stuff.  There are two other people in my class (not nurses) which takes the pressure off of me answering every question.

Didn’t have much going on today after class–had leftover Chinese and went grocery shopping.  I am catching up on blogs and doing some reading.  I’ll be heading to bed shortly.

Tomorrow I have one day on the floor.  Hopefully this time there will be something interesting…like a Cardizem or Amiodarone drip!   I hate to admit this, but I think I’m getting a little bit more used to getting up early.  Of course I’ll just get totally used to it and then I’ll be switching back to working nights.
