The End and the Beginning

Sunday, February 28, 2010

It’s the end of February my friends.  This month dragged at times, but also flew by.

I find the end of months, and therefore the beginning of new months to be a time to recollect and start fresh.  Re-evaluate if you will.  Here goes…

Good news…I have kept my dresser FREE OF CLUTTER for the entire month of February!! Yay for me!  I know this may seem like a very small thing to many people, but I always have clutter on my dresser.  So this was a major thing for me.  And believe me–there were MANY times when I felt extremely lazy and just wanted to put clothes or “stuff” there but then I just bit the bullet and made myself keep it clean.  And it’s a good feeling.

So for the month of March it will be my goal to keep the area on top of my file cabinet and beside my chair in the office clear of clutter.  This will be another big one for me.  There is always piles of stuff there!  Wish me luck.

Next…I need to seriously get back on the eating healthy track.  Christmas and the birthdays are way past, so no more excuses.  Summer is on its way so I need to get going.  Going grocery shopping tomorrow so good food will go in the cart.  My goal is to lose 8 pounds in March.

My first day of IMC will be tomorrow.  I’m excited but also nervous.  I’m going to try to really learn the cardiac meds and the EKG rhythms even before I have my class.  So that means bringing my old nursing books to work to look at during down times.  Go me.

Man, these four days went by fast.  And I was tired for most of them.  I really have to make it a priority to get the proper amount of sleep for this next month.  That would be a good goal.

Sad news…a co-workers son who was extremely sick just passed away.  Just makes you realize how short life can be.

Let’s all get out there and make this new month whatever we want it to be!

Week 8: Texas Tater Casserole

Saturday, February 27, 2010

Mmmm….this one was DEFINITELY a keeper.  I made it about a week ago and we both absolutely loved it.  I’m sure it will become part of our frequent rotation.

Of course it came from Betty Crocker’s Easy Everyday Vegetarian.  Love that cookbook.

I altered the recipe a bit.

Texas Tater Casserole (my version!)

Makes four large servings or 8 small side dish servings

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 large onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, finely chopped

2 cups frozen soy-protein crumbles

1 can condensed Cheddar cheese soup

1 cup frozen whole kernel corn

1/2 cup chunky-style salsa

2 teaspoons chili powder

approximately 4-5 cups frozen potato nuggets (tater tots!)

1/2 cup taco-seasoned (or whatever flavor you like best) cheese

To make:

Heat oven to 375 degrees.

Place vegetable oil in large skillet.  Add onion and garlic and cook over medium heat until tender–about 10 minutes (stir as needed–don’t let the garlic burn!).  Stir in crumbles, soup, corn, salsa, and chili powder.  Spoon into 9 x 13 inch pan.

Top with rows of tater tots.

Bake uncovered for 40 minutes.  Sprinkle with cheese.  Bake 5 additional minutes until cheese is melted.

Don’t you love how all the tater tots are lined up in a row? 🙂

Cheesy deliciousness!

I’m amazed I actually wrote this post EARLY today!  That’s because I still need to go to the grocery store to get items for the appetizer I’m bringing tonight.  And maybe even head to Target to get something to wear??  I think I’m in a clothes rut…haven’t bought anything new in a long time.

My days off are going by too quickly!!!

Good news…NO snow accumulation!!

Hope everyone enjoys their weekend.

Fluffy Flurries & Delightful Dozing

Friday, February 26, 2010

I awoke to big, fat fluffy snowflakes.  It was pretty mild out and not much accumulation, so Izzy FINALLY got her morning walk again.  It’s been just plain too wet for her to go the past few days 😦  She was such a happy camper–her tail was wagging like crazy.  And I think that she really prefers to do her business when she goes on a walk…she took two huge poops!

Today was basically a lazy day and I was plenty fine with that.  Fiddled around on the computer…hello facebook!  And took a nice nap in the middle of the afternoon which was oh so cozy.  Watched some Barefoot Contessa and People’s Court.  Made Shepard’s Pie for dinner.  Will have a Gilmore Girl’s fest tonight with the rest of the ice cream…ymm Half Baked.

Tomorrow I have plans to get together with friends from work so that will be a fun night.

Can you believe it is almost the end of February!!??

Last Day of Med-Surg

Thursday, February 25, 2010

Last night was my last night on med-surg.

I’m not sure whether to express myself as 🙂 or 😦

On the one hand, I’m more than glad.  I’ve had MANY very busy nights on med-surg.  Nights where I either wanted to scream or cry.  Which can be extremely frustrating.  Not to mention the fact that there is not a lot of support for the staff on med-surg.  Med-surg nurses have the highest patient load with the least amount of support staff (i.e. generally two CNAs for 20 patients, whereas other floors each CNA has max an 8 patient load and much more frequently only 6 patients; also there is no resource nurse on the med-surg floor–a nurse designated just to float on the unit and help the other nurses who have an assignment–with problems, admissions, discharges).  Sometimes on med-surg it just seems like “every nurse for themselves.”  The morale is not very high on med-surg, that’s for sure.  Most days I leave work feeling exhausted, both physically and emotionally.  Only to come back and do it all over again.

Yet, the PEOPLE that I work with are really great.  If it weren’t for them, work would be twice as tough.  So it’s going to be hard to not work with them day in and day out.  Good thing is that I can usually visit other floors when I take a quick break.  Which I tend to be good about…other people may not visit, but I do.  I like to see everyone and catch up on the news.  One of the other things I’m not sure about is the night being too slow.  When you have fewer patients and potentially less issues, the night can really drag.   12 hours is a long time at work.  At least when you are busy, the night flies by.

Overall I am very excited about this new opportunity.  Even if I don’t LOVE it, it will be a great way to learn some more stuff and will look good on my resume.

Disappointing news from yesterday…there will be NO RAISES this year.  Even though they had sent out a letter back in January or possibly earlier, saying that there were going to be raises this year.  Turns out the hospital is still really in the red and short of laying people off, they are “holding off” on the raises for now.  Or so they say.

This really pissed me off.  I mean, I don’t want to see my fellow co-workers laid off, but seriously, it’s been 2 years with no raise at all…not even cost of living.  Things are not staying the same price, yet my income is.  Doesn’t seem right.

On a more positive note, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first day off of FOUR!!  Today I mostly slept 🙂  Got a pizza and watched some Gilmore Girls (love that show!).  Relaxed with my sweetie and now we are going to watch a movie with some ICE CREAM.  Then bed again…I love bed 🙂

Winter is Back

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

We have quite a bit of WET, HEAVY snow here in MA this morning.

Okay, I am warning everyone, I am going to complain….

Why do we always get snow when I have to work?  There is almost nothing I hate worse than working for 12 hours, getting out of work to clean off your car, driving home in the slippery snow, and then having to shovel when you get home.  All I really wanted to do is climb straight into bed!

My back is killing me and my hair is soaking wet!

All I can hope is that this will be gone before I go in tonight.  I think it should.  But then we’re going to get a repeat tomorrow

Bed is calling my name.

A Cure??

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

Not sure if this will cure Kimm’s cold, but the vegetable soup is simmering away and the bread dough is rising.

Tonight’s dinner should be yummy.

The other part of the equation…orange juice and rest!

I’m heading to work tonight…only TWO more days of med-surg (and that’s only if I don’t get floated to IMC tonight or tomorrow.)  I hope that I get my schedule tonight since I don’t know what I’m working past this weekend.

On another note…today is quite gloomy.  Dark gray skies and drizzly rain all day.  Bleh.  Where is the sun!?

Is Winter Ever Going to End??

Monday, February 22, 2010

I only ask because I would like some warm weather. I’m tired of always feeling cold.

And I would also like for Kimm to be able to breathe (yep, she’s sick again).

Ahh spring…where are you??

Back at home base…

Sunday, February 21, 2010

Last night I was actually working on a floor with some of my original friends from work!  It was NICE 🙂

Lately I’ve been floated so much that I don’t really have a “home.”  And then tonight when I was at work I decided to go check IMC for my schedule and I did not see my name there.  So I had to send out an email asking if I was going to be put on the schedule???  So hopefully I will hear back soon.  There’s only one more week of this current schedule and I don’t know anything beyond that at this point.  Not to mention requests for summer vacations are due by March 1st and if I don’t know my weekends or how my schedule normally goes, it will be difficult to put in for that!

But I did what I could so that’s all I can do.

Work was not bad.  I tried to have a positive attitude and things turned out okay.  I have to admit it was nice chatting with everyone…it DEFINITELY made the night pass more quickly.  I really hope that I will have some friends on IMC.  That’s the one thing I hate about changing floors…you have that initial period of not really knowing people and that can be tough.

One more night on and then one off!

Week 7: Peanut Butter and Jelly Bars

Saturday, February 20, 2010

It’s no secret…I really like to watch Ina Garten (aka the Barefoot Contessa) cook.  There’s something about her basic, easy style–simple ingredients with lots of flavor.  And it’s just too sweet that she loves her husband Jeffrey so much…they are so cute.  Whenever I get a chance I try to watch her show on Food Network.

So anyways, we were heading over to a friend’s house last night and I volunteered to make dessert.  Since they have kids I figured this dessert would be perfect.  What kids don’t like peanut butter and jelly?  Not to mention, Kimm LOVES peanut butter.

I have made this once before in the past, but it’s been a long time so I figured I would count it as a new recipe this year, especially since I changed up the type of jelly used.  Before I had used raspberry, this time I used grape.  The nice thing is that you can use whatever you like or have on hand.

I’m linking to the recipe on the Food Network page since it comes directly out of her cookbook.  If you try these, I guarantee you’ll have a dessert you’ll be making lots more in the future.  I’m so glad we have some leftovers!

Ina Garten’s Peanut Butter and Jelly Bars (makes a 9x 13 pan worth–cut them as large or as small as you want)

The only tip I would offer is to cover the bars with tin foil about half way through as sometimes the top can brown faster than the bar cooks.

I can’t wait to have another one of these for lunch!

Thankfully I slept better last night.  But it’s off to work tonight.  Two on, one off, then two on again.  I’ll be glad for my next stretch off.

Late Nights

*postdated for Friday, February 19, 2010

It’s another late night.  In at 1 am.

All these late nights out are putting my blogging schedule off kilter.  I think I may have to blog in the morning instead of in the evening 🙂

All I know is that I’m heading to bed and HOPING TO HECK that I get a better night of sleep than I did last night (which was practically non-existent).  Since I have to work the next two nights I’d better catch up.
