First Halloween

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Unfortunately I won’t be able to celebrate Halloween in our new house 😦  This kind of bums me out because this is the first ever Halloween that we will have been able to have trick-or-treaters.  All the other years I’ve been in an apartment and especially for the last seven years, a locked building, with an apartment on the 4th floor!  So of course there ain’t nobody climbing all those stairs for candy!  Kimm will hold down the fort and hand out candy.  I’m kind of interested to see how many kids stop by.

Last night at work was not so bad.  It went by fairly fast because I was precepting again.  Which I REALLY enjoyed.  The preceptor who normally works with this nurse in training called out for the night, so they asked me!  I’m glad and hope that this means maybe they’ll consider me for a full-fledged preceptor position in the future.  The nurse I’m working with is now up to taking four patients at a time.  The difficult part is just double checking to make sure all the documentation is done.  I swear, most of the time, nursing is more about documentation, rather than patient care.

Okay, it’s drizzling out and I have to quickly take Izzy on her morning walk and then to bed.  Tonight is going to be a long night since it’s daylight savings time and I’ll actually have to work 13 hours instead of 12.  Yikes.  I’ll need all the sleep I can get!

Halloween Fun

Friday, October 30, 2009

Last night Kimm and I carved pumpkins and roasted pumpkin seeds.  It was so much fun 🙂  This was actually the first time we’ve ever done this together because we never had a place to put the pumpkins before.  But this year we’ll be able to put them outside the side door tomorrow night for when the trick-or-treaters come.  Plus this afternoon I decorated the side door with some spooky fake spiders!–only $1 at Target…how’s that for decorating on a budget!   I just wish I could be here tomorrow night instead of working.  Not to mention I’ll also have to work an extra hour because of daylight savings time.  Why do I always get stuck working those weekends??

But soon it’s off for the afternoon walk and getting ready for tonight.  At least we’re doing something fun at work tonight–a Halloween potluck.  I’m making some vegetarian chili–basically beans and noodles, no fake meat!  Can’t wait.

My design (we found both of ours online…we are NOT great free-hand artists!)

Kimm’s design–her’s is scarier!

Slimy pumpkin guts…

All lit up!

Not too bad for our first attempt!

Seeds prior to toasting…I realize now I don’t have any pictures of them post-roast.  And seeing that I am lazy, there will not be any pictures.  But they look like any other roasted pumpkin seeds.  Although we did do half regular (with just salt) and then half with a seasoned mix (some melted butter, garlic salt, Worcestershire sauce and salt).  They were both VERY tasty.  We got about 1-1/2 cups seeds from two pretty tiny pumpkins which I thought was a lot.

Hard to see spiders due to my reflection in the glass…

Creepy!

I love how they dangle!

I hope everyone has an awesome Halloween!  Is anyone dressing up?  If so, what are you going as???

It’s kind of ironic that this year I was invited to FOUR Halloween parties tonight and of course I have to work!

By the end of this weekend it will be November already.  WHERE DOES THE TIME GO????

Doggy Training Class

Thursday, October 29, 2009

Today was Izzy’s first class!

I think she did pretty good.

Today’s lessons included: SIT and HEEL.

Rewarded with many treats.  Which we had brought some, but not enough.  So then we had to use some of the treats that they provided.  Imagine my surprise (and utter disgust) when she hands me a handful of cut up hot dogs and tells me to put them in my pocket (NO WAY!!).  I don’t think she thought of any vegetarians that would be in the class.  Not that we make Izzy eat vegetarian, but we certainly don’t feed her raw hot dogs!  Thankfully I had a plastic baggie I could put the “treats”  in.  But from now on, we will be bringing some of Izzy’s regular food for treats (it’s small and I won’t feel so bad rewarding her so much and having her gorge on treats). But wouldn’t you know it, Izzy just gobbled those hot dogs down!

We practiced the sit and heel on our afternoon walk and it seemed to go pretty well.  But she needs much more training 🙂  We are supposed to work with her 20-30 minutes twice a day.

Off to watch a movie and have some poppycorn!  Last day off…sad face 😦

Being Neighborly…

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

Today we actually got out and did something again.  We visited a co-worker of mine from work who also lives in Agawam.  Her and her wife have two kids–SO CUTE.  A handful though!  But it made me imagine what it might be like when we have kids 🙂  It was really nice to just sit and talk with someone and be neighborly for part of the day.

Other than that it was a pretty uneventful day.  I had a difficult time sleeping last night and was up by 6:30.  Sat and read on the couch for a few hours and then was on the computer until Kimm got up.  So of course that made me tired tonight and I took a 3 hour nap while Kimm watched her hockey game.

It RAINED all day long.  We have a mini lake going on in our driveway.  Izzy just went for a morning walk–that was quite a sight–the two of us and her with our umbrellas.  The coffee tasted extra good today because it was so blah outside.

Made black bean quesadillas and brown rice for dinner–holy yum.  And made up another batch of apple crisp which I am about to enjoy after I finish writing this post!

Here’s the loot from yesterday…

100_2730

Sneakers…love the bit of orange

100_2732

Slippers–super soft

100_2734

Boots–waterproof and furry inside!

100_2726

My key lime vest…wore it on the walk today–SUPER warm and cozy

100_2727

Kimm’s navy vest (with my polka dot umbrella peaking out from behind)…

That pumpkin spice latte…DEFINITELY have to get another one before the season is over.

I predict that I will have to use my nasal spray before going to bed since I am completely stuffed up.  I am STILL fighting off this cold.  Sigh…

Tomorrow is dog training class…we’re both excited and hopeful that this will work.

Pumpkin Spice Latte!

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Had a GOOD night tonight!

After getting up at 4:30 pm we had dinner–simple–mac and cheese and fries.

Then made the decision to go out shopping.  It was nice to get out of the house.

A while back I had gotten two pairs of sneakers for work–remember the yellow and green ones?  Anyways, they turned out to be TOO BIG.  Slipping on my heel all the time.  Uncomfortable after just one day.  So I saw on the receipt that I could return them for store credit.  Which is what I did–and found THREE pairs of shoes in return.  A pair of winter boots!  Yeah–finally some that are not too tight.  And a pair of eco-friendly slippers.  And a pair of sneakers for work and walking Izzy.  I was MUCHO happy at that store.  I only had to pay about $17 above my credit.

We headed to Old Navy because Kimm had to return some jeans that were too big.  Wish I had that problem 🙂  While we were there we found some cool winter vests for only $25 each.  Of course we each had to get one!  Kimm–navy, me–lime green.  They will be perfect for walking Izzy and for shoveling.

And then I stopped to get some cross-stitch floss for a Christmas project at A.C. Moore.  They already have the Christmas craft stuff out!

And last, but CERTAINLY NOT LEAST, we stopped in at Barnes and Noble.  I looked at the latest People magazine–isn’t that Sparrow James Midnight Maddon the cutest thing?  And before we left we got our first Pumpkin Spice Lattes of the season.  So good.  Expensive, but worth it.

Okay…since it’s late, I will show pictures of everything tomorrow.  I do this because I can.  I like to keep everyone in suspense!

Night all.

Chores!

Monday, October 26, 2009

Kimm and I both accomplished quite a bit today!

Kimm got the ENTIRE lawn mowed.  Whew!  She’s been meaning to do that for about a month.  She was VERY happy to have it done.  And it looks great…love those straight lawn edges she makes 🙂

As for me, I did a load of laundry (including the dog bed–it definitely needed it!), vacuumed all the carpet, and went grocery shopping!  Not too shabby considering this is my day to work.

Don’t you feel good when you get needed chores out of the way?  Leaves more time for non-guilty fun, in my opinion.

I also figured out our grocery shopping total this month and we are WAY under!!!  We spent (after today)–$244.88.  And we had budgeted $300.  So $55.12 under.  I am SO happy. I have decided that the extra money I save this month and November I will be putting towards ingredients for Christmas goodies (cookies and candies) in December!  Smart, right!  I know.

Okay, now I have to get in the shower.

On the menu for tonight–veggie burgers and salads.  LOVE.

BTW, absolutely GORGEOUS fall day out there.  Sunny and breezy.

Only one night on, then three off.  How could I NOT be happy 🙂

Leaves…

Sunday, October 25, 2009

Today I woke up feeling not so good.  To be honest, I kind of felt like I was getting sick yesterday, but I tried to ignore it.  And then I went out with friends from work and got home late and just felt wiped out.  The feeling was magnified this morning.

There were lots of sniffles, and sneezing, and congestion, and feeling exhausted.  Dayquil was taken.  Allergy pills were taken.  Lots of extra water was drunk.

But I still feel pretty crappy.

But life must go on.

Izzy got her walks.  It was such a beautiful day!  Sunny and mild–perfect when you are feeling well, but just okay when you are feeling like poopy shit!

And then there were the leaves.

Here’s the story…

Kimm wants to try to mow the lawn tomorrow.  Because she’s been sick for quite some time, she hasn’t had a chance to do it.  Well, now she feels better and so it must be done.  She was originally going to just mulch over all the fall leaves.

But that was before our gargantuous (!!!) oak tree started dropping all of its leaves.

I wish I would have taken a picture but I was feeling too much like crap to remember to do that.

But take one leaf.

Multiply it by 1000.

And then by 1000 again.

And then you probably have an idea of how many leaves are falling from this old oak tree.

So just to get some of the leaves off the ground (we kept some on that Kimm will be able to mulch), we  filled I believe 8 bags–8 bags that were packed FULL of leaves.

And mind you, the tree has only about half the leaves off of it by now!

So I’M SURE this will be repeated AT LEAST one more time before the end of fall.

So we did the leaves (Kimm did about 75% and I did 25%)–actually it wasn’t too bad even though I was not feeling well.  The best part was coming in after and taking a nice long hot shower.

Tonight we are going to watch a movie and have some popcorn.

And then early to bed for me.

Good news I just discovered tonight–I get paid FIVE times in October!!!  Yay for weekly paychecks.  It was going to be wicked close for the budget this month, but now it will be fine.

Huge sigh of relief.

And then Kimm reminded me that I get paid five times during December too!!!  And I will be having some increased pay due to the holidays in December!!  One of the only bonuses of working on Christmas.  Oh yeah, I have to work Christmas this year–which is a Friday and then of course that is my weekend to work too.  So it will be a long Christmas weekend at the hospital.

But we shall deal with that when it comes.

Tonight I will have fun!

Singing (er, Walking!) in the Rain

Saturday, October 24, 2009

Yup, it rained ALL day so it was a wet two walks today.  It didn’t seem to faze Izzy at all.  Just Kimm and I were slightly damp 🙂

But there’s nothing like coming home and then getting all cozy afterwards!

Well, at least Kimm is going to be snuggled on the couch tonight, watching her beloved hockey.

I, on the other hand, am going to brave the elements and get together with a few co-workers for some drinks, snacks, and conversation–I’m sure we will talk complain a lot about work!

So I need to get a move on since I have to shower and get all my stuff together and I’m supposed to be there by 8 pm AND it takes about 1/2 hour to get there!

Hopefully I won’t be too tired since we both didn’t sleep too well last night.

Autumn Walk

Friday, October 23, 2009

A few days ago when Kimm and I were going out for our walk with Izzy, I decided to take some pictures of the gorgeous fall sights on our walk…

Hope you enjoy!

Julie and Julia

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Tonight we had date night 🙂

I saw that Julie and Julia was playing at the local theater…only $5 a ticket!  That beats the $12 I would have to pay at the full price cinema.

Not sure if I mentioned it before, but I’ve really been wanting to see this movie.  I had heard that Meryl Streep was excellent as Julia Child.  After seeing the movie, I’d have to agree 100%.

I had also read the book, which I thought was fair to good.  Unlike most times, the movie was actually better.

Watch the preview here.  Even Kimm liked the movie…and that’s saying a lot for a chick flick like this one!

Unfortunately I’m already tired.  That’s what long hours and inadequate sleep will do to a person.

I’m going to rest my eyes 🙂
