Grocery Budget

Saturday, August 8, 2009

Okay.  So it is another month and that means another month of trying to cut down the spending on groceries, or to put it in more positive terms, get the best bang for our buck 🙂

Today we went for our first “big” grocery trip of the month.  We had gone earlier in the month, on the 1st, and spent $16.36 in food.  Today, we got a lot of food for a total of $99.87.  That means so far this month on food we have spent $116.23.  We also spent $21.98 today in household items (i.e., paper towels, napkins, etc–NON-FOOD items).

This is the first month I am breaking down our grocery spending into food and household items.  The goal is to spend less than $300 on food items alone.  Then we can see where else in the budget to scrimp. So we have $183.74 left to spend for food this month.

I have to say that I am QUITE happy with the amount we spent and the volume of food we got.  We did our meal planning before we left and we have enough stuff for about 11 dinners, lunches, breakfasts, and snacks.  And then I’m sure we’ll be able to stretch it maybe one or two more days with stuff buried in our cupboard.  We are usually able to do that…I’m magic like that in the kitchen 🙂  So hopefully we’ll be able to stretch this for 2 weeks.

I find this to be a challenge.  Of course, it would be nice not to have to worry so much about what we are buying, but in the long run, it feels satisfying.

Okay, into the shower.  I’m off to work in about an hour and a half.
