A Good Thyme (Not!)

Friday, July 10, 2009

As well as trying new recipes, I have also been wanting to expand my knowledge and use of different herbs and spices.  Well, one of the meals that we had planned to make this week involved thyme, which I have never had before.  The dish was a savory bread pudding with spinach and Monterey Jack cheese.  The entire dish (which was baked in a 9 x 13 inch pan, which is pretty large), had only 1/2 tablespoon dried thyme, but the flavor dominated the entire dish–which wouldn’t be a bad thing if you like thyme–which, sadly, I found out that I do not like 😦

Too bad too, because I actually had to buy a container of thyme at the grocery store this last week to make this dish.  And believe me, spices are NOT cheap!  So now I have this entire container of thyme that I don’t like.  I’m not sure if I should try it in something else, or just get rid of it.  I feel like I should give it another chance!  But just using MUCH less.

The thyme was not the only thing that was not that great about the dish.  To me, it was also a little bit eggy and the spinach was too stringy (it used frozen spinach).  I think if I was to make this again, I would cut down the amount of eggs, increase the amount of cheese, and leave out the thyme.  But Kimm really didn’t like it either, so I don’t think I will make it again.

That’s okay though.  As I told her, not every recipe is a winner.  So sorry, you won’t see a recipe tonight!

I can’t believe I have to go in to work tonight.  I swear I don’t know where the time goes.  It seems like I just worked a weekend, and here it is, time for me to work another weekend.  The good thing is that tonight I was able to give the first four hours of my time away and use holiday time 🙂  That will make for a shorter night tonight and then only two nights of 12 hour nights.  That makes me a little bit happier.

The Orkin man came again today.  We’re doing pretty good with the ants.  There were only a few upstairs about a few weeks ago.  He did find some in the basement–turns out there are some cracks in the basement floor that need to be sealed.  No bees in the attic!

We went to the library today too.  You want to hear something I hate about the library–I hate it when the actual librarians are the ones being loud!  Seriously, if you work at a library, you should know to be quiet.  I think that Kimm and I are the only ones that get so annoyed with loud people but I don’t know why no one else is bothered.

And talking about noise…our neighbors across the street, the ones who have a bunch of loud kids, came back from their vacation this week.  I think this past week has been the nicest thus far since we moved in because it was so nice and quiet–no kids playing basketball in the street, or riding their bikes in the street, or little kids yelling “Mommy!’ over and over.  But the minute they got back, that all started again.  I mean, do no other neighbors get irritated by this?

Anyways.  Enough complaining.  Maybe I’m just super sensitive or something.  I don’t think I am, but I could be.

Well, the eyes are feeling mighty sleepy so I think I shall try for a nap before I have to leave at 10:15 pm.  Tonight I am trying something new–I’m bringing some dry oatmeal to work to make oatmeal for my night snack.  It’s cheap and filling.  I can’t wait to have it!

Oh yeah, and Kimm is making us chocolate banana milkshakes before I go in to work 🙂  That has to make a girl happy!
