Ah, the joys of home ownership.  We have ants.  So far in just one spot–they are swarming around our downstairs toilet in the one and a half bathroom.  We noticed them a few days ago.  At that point there were just a few.  Now we have A LOT!  And while ants don’t bother me that much, when you see about 20 or more of them crawling over your toilet, you start to get a little creeped out.

I wanted to find a way to get rid of them naturally.  I did a little research online today and found out that a little dishwashing detergent mixed with some water in a spray bottle kills them.  I tried it and it worked.

That was good for the ones that I saw, but now we have to work on preventing them from coming in.  I’m not sure what to do for that yet.  Several sites said you could put down ground cinnamon or ground pepper and that would detract them from coming in.  I’m not sure if I want that just sitting out with the cats around.  We could also sprinkle either of those around the base of the house–again, not sure if I want that around the outside of the house.  I’m going to continue to do some more research.

I’m a bit nervous because one site said that, “few pests are harder to get rid of than ants, once they’ve established themselves in your home.”  Yikes!

But the accompanying article, “How to Get Rid of Ants” on Wikihow has some interesting ways to get rid of ants that I may try…specifically the cornmeal or placing bait in a jam jar (so it won’t harm pets).

Has anyone else ever had ants and successfully gotten rid of them in a natural way??  If yes, please share your tips.
